The REAL deal with VI Jobs

Hi guys! I'm finally on STX and have been quite busy but will post a moving story soon. I have some invaluable info about Labor Department(Job Service) jobs. You can search www.ajb.org, select job bank tab at top, then select all jobs within area code... and use a VI zip code or I used fredericksted (00802) and it will display almost 300 currently available jobs in the territory. Write down all the info about each job you like and keep the VI number handy. Then, you call (340)772-2312 and ask for Ms. Sonnis at the f'sted Dept. of Labor and speak directly with her about these jobs. There is a process to go through in order to sign up. It took me about two hours on a friday afternoon. While going through the process myself I mentioned ya'll and asked if she would mind if I told this board's participant's about her. She told me, "no problem mon"! So... Find the listings on the site, call her and be prepared to receive a fax or three from her. Fill out the application, similar to a job app, and fax it back with a copy of your updated resume. Then call back, make sure it's ok, and give her the VI numbers for the jobs you are interested in. She will forward your resume to them and get the process going. I WISH I had known this two weeks ago when I was pulling my hair out over not being able to make progress on the job front. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Jeff

Jeff,

My STX employment research has me vicariously living out your search (as best I can with the limited time I have available). Great info on the DOL, by the way. So what kind of results have you had? Any bites from the DOL job postings?

Thanks in advance.

I surmise that JNR is doing well but he hasn't posted here for quite some time. He found me on STT at Office Max just by chance and introduced himself. I told him of a computer problem I was having, he said he would stop by but didn't and I subsequenly telephoned the number he gave me and left a voicemail message but I never heard back from him.

So who knows? Me no know!

STT- sorry about that, sent you a PM.
Mutchkin- hmm.. how to explain... ok. I may have been wrong. Though it seemed from afar there were many possibilities available through the DOL site, the reward sought has not been located. I reported to DOL in f'sted and was well treated by the staff, and found service to be near-stateside grade. After filling out paperwork and going through their openings, I applied to half a dozen positions and went home. This was early February... Since then, I've diligently read the ads, recorded positions, reported to DOL, submitted umpteen resumes, etc... I've received one phone call from a Hovensa contracting company to acknowledge receipt, and one denial letter from VI Superior Court. By now, I would have hoped to have had at least ONE interview. I continue to plod through the process and will inform the board if the situation changes somehow... On the upside, and one of the common board themes here reinforced, is that my own business has flourished and continues to grow. I am pleased with what I've been able to do for the folks here and feel as though I was correct in seeing the need in the islands for my services. Sorry for being scarce here lately, but life demands...
