For anyone wondering about food costs below is a sampling of grocery prices. Each island is represented with STT stores represented in the first four stores, STJ in the middle column of three stores and STX in the last column with four stores.

Well needed post. Thank you! Prices seem to be about 1.5 - 2x larger stateside chains from recent experience - with the exception of the canned/dried products - being close to the same. People need to know what to expect.

When I lived in Mammoth Lakes, CA (right after I left St. Croix for medical reasons) their groceries were actually higher in price. Then I found they were the 2nd highest priced VON'S in the country with Hawaii being #1.

Thanks Tippi. I recall that the Avis wasn't going to publish this anymore because of issues with the data (and probably heat from advertisers). I seldom get the VI Daily News so this information helpful.

As a general rule, it looks like Plaza is less than Pueblo on most items. I imagine that Cost-u-less is less than Plaza however. Granted, you may have to buy the bulk packages.

Pueblo has more purchasing power so I guess margin is more important than volume to them. They sure aren't putting operating profits in the stores (which are really dumps).

The Pueblo in Long Bay seems to be improving lately. I really dislike our Plaza Extra so I'll spend more elsewhere to avoid it. I wonder why those surveys never include most of what I buy? 😉

i just went to Plaza West a couple weeks back and noticed that Kraft Naturals shredded cheese was $3.99, which i thought was great considering cheese is usually pretty expensive. Went to Plaza East and saw the same for $5.99. Why the price discrepency? There are a couple of those on this list too. Are the stores owned by the same people?
