Scooter and motorcycle rental businesses shouldn't be allowed to operate on STT/STJ in my opinion. .

so you're of the opinion that people are stupid and need to be protected from themselves by other people with guns?

You cant legislate away stupid... let them ride, I'm more concerned with the "this shouldn't be allowed" type of attitude than people being adults and making their own decisions.

Visitors with little to no experience on mopeds anywhere wobbling precariously on the equally precarious roads of St Thomas and St John are as much danger to others as to themselves. I'm a very good, cautious and defensive driver but several hair-raising experiences and close calls and many, many conversations with EMTs and ER personnel led to the opinion I expressed and which I'll stick to.

death statistics are an interesting subject

more than 12 pedestrians are killed every day , and where we live it is pretty much equal pedestrian/scooter

did you know in 50 years about 900 people have died by mass shootings. 50 years, think about that. under obama there have been about 200 mass shootings . more than the previous 5 presidents combined ( from what i remember )

more people die by hippo than by mass shooters.

all of this and they still want to put more laws on gun ownership. drunk driving kills about 27 people a day. illegal gun owners ( not legally registered weapons ) kill more people than mass shooters. yet they have not found a way to get guns out of the hands of criminals. they just want to make it harder for law abiding citizens to get guns.

i guess my point is , even though 1 death is too many, the number killed by scooter is not that high here. in the us it is. in thailand and bali it is.

But for someone like me, who is extremely experienced, you would remove my right to ride one when I visit St. Thomas?

If I had my 'druthers which isn't likely to happen then if you couldn't rent one while here then your option would be to bring your own with you ...

Think of all the other businesses scooter rental support.
Schneider and JFL
Funeral Homes
Casket makers
EMT personnel
Crime scene tape makers
Companies that repatriate bodies to mainland
Banning scooters would be detrimental to the small business backbone of our country.

Not all scooter accidents are deadly -- don't forget the surgeons, medical supply houses for crutches etc, drug stores for bandages, pharmacies for painkillers and antibiotics and the taxis and rental car companies they will use forever afterwards.
