Hi everyone,
I have a problem with disappearing tomato plants. Every morning when I go out to water my garden the tomato plants are gone. I will replace them and the next morning gone again. None of the other plants are touched. The entire plant is gone and it looks like someone took a gardening trowel and just scooped them out. Last night I put big conch shells around them along with the tomato cages. This morning big scoops of dirt missing and no tomato plants. What ever is taking them even dug out an empty space where a tomato plant used to be. There are no foot prints, paw prints and even plants close by are not disturbed at all. Does anyone have any ideas what kind of critter is doing this. I know this is funny but I really want tomatos. Help

Just a thought, but maybe iguanas, unless you have some odd neighbours or a resident jumbie! Enclose your tomato plant bed with inexpensive chicken wire. If and when you DO get fruit, putting some mesh over the plants will also deter the trashy birds who'll gobble up your crop in a heartbeat.

Tammy, go over to the STX Animal Shelter and talk to that man that is the groundskeeper - he raises all kinds of stuff in raised beds, but it seems to me he had some sort of contraption strung over his veggies - and he tried to explain to me what would eat them but I didn't get it - I think he was talking about birds, but I got lost in the Crucian to Southern translation! I think he had tomatoes...he seemed like a nice guy and I'd bet he'd help you.

Thanks STT Resident and Becky R.
I think it might be an iguana. It is funny though that whatever it is it only wants tomato plants. No tomatoes just the plants. Last night I rigged up some misquito netting over them. That seemed to do the trick. No missing plants today. I will keep my fingers crossed to grow successful veggies here. Take care.
