How strict are they here in speeding/traffic violations?

I just got my first traffic violation here and I need to go to the court but the date they wrote on my ticket I am off island. Any advice?

Thanks

Meaning, the officer probably won't turn in the ticket, so officially you never violated the law.

But if you want to be legit, call the court house, or whatever phone number is on the ticket, and explain that you'll be off island. They'll tell you what to do.

I think it says if you want to contest the violation to go to court. You can go and pay beforehand. It will come back to haunt you in the future when registering your car.

If you don't have to be at court other than to contest it, then wait until at least the court date and call the court to see if the ticket has been turned in before paying it. At least on STX, they've been horrible about turning in tickets lately and if they don't turn it in then you don't have to pay.

A traffic violation fine that is unpaid will be due when you next register your car if the ticket was in fact processed,

I guess the island answer is not to question this ... however, here I go: why write a ticket if you aren't going to turn it in? Aren't there thefts, stabbings, and drug deals you could be tending to instead of stopping someone for a ticket that won't be processed?!? Crikey!

Sweetie, it is not easy to understand, I agree. But it is what it is and will go on whether we are here or not. Spend 4 or 5 yeaR here and live it then change it.

If you dit it, pay it. If you didn't do it and can't be here, pay it anyhow to save yourself future hassles from it. Live and learn.

Pay the ticket! Read the back of the ticket about how to proceed. If absentee is not addressed, then call the number on the ticket to inquire. Please don't pay attention if people are telling you how to beat the system.

If you didn't do it, get the money from the person who did!
Hope this lesson learned - Never lend out your car to anyone!
The tickets follow the car, not the driver. From what I understand, anyone can correct me.

Juanita - it's not trying to beat the system, it's saving time - they won't take your money even if you have the ticket with you in person if the ticket wasn't turned in - I've tried on behalf of two people and been turned away! It's silly but it's worth it to call first to see if it's turned in before going through the hassle of going down there and trying to pay.

Maybe they want the actual person there?? I simply don't trust anything hanging out there not taken care of. Would make me nervous, particularly now that we are supposedly connected via computer to the stateside dmv.

goal is right. I had my ticket in hand and they would not let me pay the fine.
No problem registering my cars since. The ticket never was turned in by the officer. It's probably under the seat of his car.

Do officers have a time limit they have to turn it in by? Doesn't seem fair he could turn this ticket in a year later and burn you.
