Hi,

I am looking into Nursing School at St. Croix and wondered what some of your thoughts on that would be? Is it a good program or would staying in the states be a better bet? I'm currently in Texas, have a husband that just returned from a deployment overseas and is getting ready to retire from the Army, and have a 2 year old son, and thought that a change of scenery and finishing my Nursing degree in the Virgin Islands might be an interesting and pretty cool thing to do. We would be going into this move with an open mind of course, planning for a 2 year/temporary move, but if things are going good, why not stay a while. Cozumel is usually our home away from home, so we're not strangers to the tropical setting, but have not been to the Virgin Islands before and do not know what to expect, except for what I have learned from this message board and the internet.

Any information you have to offer would be greatly appreciated and could someone tell me what part of St. Croix the campus is on, and what might be a good area to look for a rental if I attended the college?

Thank You!

Before you decide anything, plan on coming down for 2-4 weeks. This is not Cozumel and can not be compared - apples and oranges.

The college is on the west end. Cheapest rentals are on the west end but I personnally would not live on the west end. I would choose to live center island for many reasons or east for safety.

Best advice is to read this board, start to finish. Then you will have even more questions then you do now. And definitely come for a real pmv. This is nothing like mexico, I grew up on a bordertown and have traveled all over mexico.

the Nursing School gets pretty good reviews. I know one of the instructors who used to be head of a nursing program on the mainland and she has very positive things to say about the UVI program on STX. The campus is due north of the airport and the hospital is a 10-15 minute drive from campus. There would be reasonably priced housing options within a 15 minute drive, also.

Your son is at an age when he might have a lot of fun in the islands and you wouldn't have to worry about his school plans just yet. Do check into daycare, however, as there aren't a lot of options readily available. Would your husband be pursuing a full time job here? Or would he get to spend time being Mr. Mom while you were at school? That would certainly alleviate the daycare dilemma.

Thank you, and that sounds like a good plan to me.
