Quick questions:

Rent on a 1 bedroom in St. Thomas...

1. An average for utilities? Consider no A/C. What should be budgeted? Seems electric is outrageous and I have no idea about water.

2. What's this about cisterns? Would that be the situation at an apartment complex?

3. Do any apartments pay utilities? I'm guessing not.

Thanks!

In a lot of places, water is metered by the owner of the apartment or if you're renting a condo, the Condo Association. It can go from 2 cents to 6 cents or more per gallon. Where I live, it's on a sliding scale i.e. if you use above a certain amount the rate goes up. That's if you're on a cistern. If you live where there's city water I don't know what the rates are.

My phone bill is $31.78 for basic service & think I have call waiting. As I said on the other post my electric runs $110 to $130/month with a commercial rate. Your mileage may vary.

Oh, and I have expanded basic cable which runs about $47.00/month. I'm on dial-up internet.

Hello Cheri,

Try the cost of living page on this site, here is the link https://www.vimovingcenter.com/cost_of_living/. It has a table with average rent for various size rentals by island. It also has electric by kwh, your bill depends on consumption. What you could do to get an idea is take your electric bill for where you are at now, if you have one, and multiply your usage by what is charged in the VI. The cost of living table also has $$ for Internet, telephone, water.

Water/cisterns is the situation in most cases for houses, apartments, condos etc. How this is paid by landlord/tenants depends on the arrangement. If you have an apartment as part of a larger home with multiple residents and there is a need to buy a truck of water then the bill will likely get divided amongst those in the building. Some places, mostly condos, have water meters so you get billed for your monthly use.

You might find some apartments where electric/water is included in the rent... this might happen if the apartment is part of a larger home and there is only one meter/electric bill.

Thanks. Your comments were very helpful! I'll take a look at my electric bill and do the conversion also - good idea. I don't think I'd rent a condo - too expensive. Maybe I'll look into a roommate situation when the time comes.

You're not going to find what is commonly thought of as "apartment complexes" on STT in the way they are in the States with several buildings all owned by the same company or person. More like a single building here or there but many homes do have apartments under the main level that are rented out.
