I've been adding Virgin Islands vegetarian restaurants to the http://www.happycow.net vegetarian directly these last few weeks, and I think I have STT covered now (one entry is still pending, however).

If you know of others on any of the US Virgin Islands, can you please add them to the list? It'll make it easier for people to find vegetarian meals if there's a comprehensive list they can be referred to.

Thanks!

No, I don't own a vegetarian restaurant, if anybody's wondering!

Thanks, Lubbie and Bombi! I sent my "researcher" over to STJ (well, he was going anyway) to check out the vegetarian restaurant that used to be something Roots. He told me that one had closed, but couldn't remember the name of the new one.

I'll see if I can add them to Happy Cow...

Forward to your Roots is still open, I think. Heading east on Southside Road, take the right just before the Pine Peace basketball court.

I'll have to do my own research next time I'm on STJ. I usually don't go over during the week, though, but I guess I'll have to make a special trip sometime next month.

I suggested to Tourism that they promote the VI as vegetarian-friendly, because that's the fastest growing food category. That would be one way to distinguish the VI from most other Caribbean islands. When I add the restaurants on STJ and STX, I'll probably suggest that they use it on their website. Right now, someone from Relay for Life wants the list for their healthy eating brochure.

When I went to Grenada last year, I could only find one vegetarian restaurant listed online, and it was associated with a B&B. When I got there, though, it just so happened that a Rasta had an Ital soup stand right across the street from our hotel.

I'm going to Trinidad in July, and I think there'll be lots of vegetarian options. But, I only plan to eat rotis the entire time I'm there! I may change it up, though, with some pelau (I'm not veggie), because I love that, too, depending on how it's made.

I found one of my top ten favorite T-shirts at the thrift store on St Croix a while back, and gave it to my favorite non-meat eater, who loved it. It read:

"Save a Cow......eat a vegetarian"

It puts a whole new spin on the term "vegetarian restaurant". Yum! 🙂

P.S. You can also add Uca's and Ital Trinity to the list in Frederiksted.

Forward to Your Roots is currently STJ's only all-vegetarian restaurant. We had Satyamuna for a while, but they closed after the owners had to move off-island for family health reasons. There are good veggie options at a number of STJ restaurants but no other all-veg places.

Thanks, everyone. I don't think I can list the ones that don't have an address/phone number, because happycow.net can't verify the info, but I'll keep them on my own list.

The list is looking good thanks to all contributors. The ones on STT may be published in the Relay for Life brochure that should come out next month. Someone heard I was compiling a list, so they asked me for it, but you never know if they're going to include them.

Feel Great is on Queen Mary past Plaza West on the left in a shopping center that's kind of set back from the road. They have a big ad in the best of st croix book that just came out.

Thanks, jbatl. I just googled "caribbean vegetarian" and the happycow directory is on the first result page. The USVI has 11 listings, and that doesn't include STJ and STX yet! PR is #1 with 40, but I think Grenada cheated. Most of their listings are not strictly vegetarian, but offer vegetarin options or on request.

Somebody who used to live in Barbados (or is from there) posted a recipe on her blog for breadfruit ravioli! That's pretty creative.

Looking in the phone book for St Croix, I see a Lalita Juice Bar and Healthy Food at 54 King St. Anybody tried this one? So far, they're the only ones who answered the phone this morning!

jbatl, that's a Crucian confusion for sure! Based on their TripAdvisor reviews, they only serve raw food?
