Having read the various threads on this forum I am no further forward in knowing what the process is for the following situation and I appreciate everyone's help in advance.

1. Vehicle is on STX
2. Seller is in the States
3. I wish to purchase the vehicle ( I am on STX)
4. Documents (title and reg and copy of license) are with seller's friend on STX

What needs to be done in order for me to take legal possesion, transfer registration and title?

Thanks!

The easiest way is to have all the documents notarized with seller's signature or his friend if there is a power of attorney. Then call an expediter. Always easier for me than doing the actual DMV work myself.

I was in a similar situation several years ago when a friend left island and left a car with me to sell for him.

The "agent" seller on STX needs to get a notarized statement from the registered owner of the vehicle attesting to the fact that he's authorized to sell the vehicle on behalf of the owner. After that, you just go through the usual procedure with both buyer and seller (in this case agent) going to the DVM together to take care of all the transfer paperwork. Hope that helps!

I agree with the expediter suggestion. It costs but is worth it and is perfectly legal! Otherwise, what I suggested works.

I don't know on St. Croix but try asking at one of the notaries' office or a local secretarial/mail service.
