Good Afternoon Everyone,

So, that does it for another sailing season...Dawn and I sailed our last race last night and I am already in withdrawal. I guess I will have to deal with it until we move in January, and I am sure we will get our fill once we get there. I was wondering if anyone knew the which vin numbers indicate a car has been built in the US? If my memory serves me correct, I think it is any number that starts with a 1, 3, 4....we have decided to ship our Pathfinder and are trying to figure out if we are going to get stuck paying the additional 6% tax.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

I know that VIN's starting with 1 are made in the US. I'm not sure about any others. I only paid 3.5% on my Triumph. Aren't Nissan's made in Japan? Do they make any of them in the US? It is also my understanding that the 6% is for cars made in Canada. I may be wrong in that. If I am, I'm sure someone here will correct me. Also I found I was able to haggle some with the Customs folks as to the real value of the car as opposed to the book value.

The sailing season here is significantly longer. Touch base when your arrival date is closer, and let's see if we can get you a ride with a racing sailboat.

I believe it's 1 and 4. 3 may be Mexico. J is Japan. If it's a truck, there is no duty. Watch out for the 2's. That's Canada. The most expensive duty, 6%, All others are 2.5%.

Good Morning,

I checked the vin # and it starts with a J, so it looks like we will be paying the tax but at least it isn't from Canada! Thank you for the information everyone, it really helps with our planning.

Ms.Chuy, I am definitely in for that ride you had mentioned....I'll be contacting you in a couple of months. What kind of boat are you racing on these days?
