What about a commute?

Hey Everyone

Possibly a silly question: Do many people work in Charlotte Amalie and live on the East End? Is the commute just terrible? We will have a car, of course. I just remember that it seemed to take quite awhile to get anywhere in a car there, but I was on vacation so I wasn't worried about it, and now the details are fuzzy... Anybody?? Thanks!!

Of course we do. Traffic is usually somewhat of a snarl during morning and evening 'rush' hours like anywhere else - but it can also back up a bit coming over the 'hill' into town when lots or even 1 ship is in port.

Unlike a comunite in California from Orange County to Hollywood or something like that, it is a piece of cake - why? Because you are really not going that far in terms of miles so one can really sort of get used to it. My point - in many other major cities one lives in the suburbs and commutes to work every day - sometimes 40- 50 miles or more - we aren't even that big from one tip of the island to the other!!!!

The other difference between a rush hour commute here on STX and DC (from where we came) is that people here are not always trying to cut you off or ram their way into traffic. In fact, it's just the opposite -- while there are a few folks who feel the need to speed past you or honk at you to go as soon as a light changes, we're just amazed and delighted by the number of people who stop to let you into traffic or to make a right turn (which is the "hard" one when driving on the left) even though they have the right of way. There isn't that same sense of frantic self-importance that permeated DC commutes -- most everyone seems to take traffic slow downs/lines at stoplights in stride.

Thanks for the input! As usual, very helpful.

So would you say it takes about a half-hour, in rush hour, to get from the Red Hook area to Charlotte Am? I realize the distance isn't much as the crow flies, but crawling along in traffic takes time, of course! =)

Unlike many stereotypical Californians, we have a very short commute, just two miles to work. Of course, that only takes about 5 min, even at 8:00am, thanks to the straight, three-lane- each-way roads that we are so desperate to escape! =)

Hello Mallory,

Villa Fairview to Home Depot would take about 15 minutes to drive.
