Hello:

I have been searching the net and past threads and havent found exactly what I am looking for. I am sure some of you can help!

1.) How far (disance) from St Thomas to St Croix?
2.) How long of a ferry ride is it? How much does it usually cost? Is there a regular schedule?
3.) How long of a plane ride is it? How much does it usually cost? Is there a regular schedule?

4.) Is it possible or realistic to live on one island and work or go to school on another island?

Does any one know how much a carton of cigarettes are in the islands?

Thanks
Looking forward to your your responses.

Keith

I believe I read that it's 40 miles.

2.) How long of a ferry ride is it? How much does it usually cost? Is there a regular schedule?
1 hour 15 minutes $60 (?) for residents , only runs from December-April

3.) How long of a plane ride is it? How much does it usually cost? Is there a regular schedule? not sure how long the plane ride is but I think I read $70-80 , I'm sure there's a daily schedule

4.) Is it possible or realistic to live on one island and work or go to school on another island?
No, since the ferry doesn't run during the summer and fall. I don't think it'd be cost effective to ride a plane every day.

You were probably hoping for info from someone on an island, but I'm researching a possible relocation myself.

If my information is incorrect, can somebody please correct me andI'll go back into my shell 😉

Even if you are incorrect Susan please "do-not" go back into your shell.

I am learning just as a lot of other people are learning too.

Any reason why the ferry only runs part of the year?
I was reading on the net from a fish and vacation site that they were supposed to get a "EUROPEAN" style high speed ferry?

Any islanders heard of such a thing?

Susan I belive you are from KY? I am from the Norther KY area myself.

Susan which island are you looking into moving to?

Thanks
KF

Keith and Susan,

Close to where in Northern KY are you from? I am from Southern Ohio. My wife and I have been to St Croix twice. We plan to move to St Croix also, when we retire. If we can answer any questions, feel free to ask. Hope your possible relocation goes well.

The flight takes about 18 minutes on the sea plane. It's $130 RT and youcan get a rate as low as $85 sometimes.
The ferry between the islands only runs in the winter, as it is really a Boston ferry that runs to the Cape in the summer months. They come down here as a service that everyone looks forward to! Hopefully one day we will have one of our own. Someone did try, but they went bankrupt already! Had they only tried before the Boston Fast Ferry people came up with the idea, they may still around!

Hi Susan & Keith,
I'm not there yet, either, but if you go to www.vinow.com I think you'll find tons of schedules for ferry's and planes and lots of other really interesting stuff. The phone book site is also very good: www.viphonebook.com. And the newspaper is: www.virginislandsdailynews.com. I found this board over a month ago and it's just the berries for great people and very useful moving information.

Good luck to you both!!
John

Keith:

The Virgin Islands Fast Ferry between STX and STT is a 600 passenger catamaran, Salacia, that has been running for 3 seasons.

As to why the ferry doesn't run in the off season....

If it wasn't for the fact that it's cheaper to run a ferry at a loss for 6 months than to not run it at all, the VI Fast Ferry wouldn't even run in HIGH season. VIFF is a subsidiary of Boston Harbor Cruises, Inc. which operates Salacia during the Summer/Fall between Boston and Provincetown. During that time it carries 100,000 more passengers than it does in the USVI, grossing about $3 Million more while only charging $37 per head one way. Salacia moves to the USVI in winter with the goal of losing about $100,000 for the season, which is cheaper than putting the cat in mothballs.

I don't know how well they did this year, but in '02-'03 they lost about a quarter million. As a result, the company almost opted not to return last winter. If the Port Authority had not backed down last August and only raised its service fee from $1.50 to $2 per person instead of $3, VIFF may well have bowed out, according to Director of Operations Kevin Matthews.

Not too sure what happened to Chris Elliott's Mermaid Fast Ferry, though. Does anyone have any news on that?

You seem to have the ferry answers but - paid $17.99 a carton for B&H menthol lites this weekend. Packs are about $2 if you buy them in most stores.

Pamela:

Thank you very much
I was going to post a new thread thinking that question may have gotten lost

I am also thinking that Marlboro would be about that same price
and that Basic and the brands below are just a little cheaper than the $17.99.

Thanks
Keith

Yes, Kools are little less as well. The prices are pretty much even across the stores with Pueblo charging a little more. Must be company policy as thier liquor prices are higher as well. Sin tax?
