Nearly done with school and looking into a job as a PA. Anyone know how much PA's are used?

What specialty are you looking for? I know they're used in the ER, but I don't know if they're hiring.

PA's are used in ther ER, there are a couple working in Family Practice and one in cardiology. PA utilization is really weak in the VI. The VI is the ONLY place in the US and territories where PAs can't write prescriptions. We have to get everything co-signed still. While PA's have existed as a profession for 30 years or so, my VI PA license is #10--which I got just 3 1/2 years ago!

As a second note, there has been tremendous strife at the hospital in St. Croix recently, having to do with pay cuts, pay anomolies, and poor management, and several of the 6 PAs working there have left or are leaving soon. This is leaving the ER vastly understaffed, and there is an immediate need for ER trained PAs right now.

I have heard of similar problems about the hospital. I have a friend that was working in the ER and she is now having to apply for her job again. She was working as a traveling RN so that may be were some of he problem lies. Well hopefully all the strife will lead to something better.

Dr Chase (orthopedic surgeon) and Dr Shapiro (ENT) both have PAs in their private practices. I am not sure, but Dr Bacot (orthopedic surgeon) may also have one. And I believe there are PAs in the ER here, too. Not so much drama as St Croix. You could be a candidate for a look-see networking trip.;)

Hey Guys,

I'm a ER PA-C in Oklahoma. I came down to the VI a few years ago looking to see what the Islands were all about and I was offered a position at the ER on STX, I couldn't make the dollars and cents work so I'm still here in Oklahoma. Today I received a phone call from the hospital wanting to interview me again for a position. Whats going on with PA's there or with the hospital? Anyone know? Does any work for the hospital? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Will

Hi,

my name is Josie and am planning to move there with my husband this November. I'm looking into PA positions there and started to fill out the paperwork needed to get a license there.
Any recent insider's tips and thoughts are appreciated with regards to job prospects and licensing process there.
The last response for this thread is from 2010 and I couldn't find anything else in this forum more recent, hopefully there has been some changes about PAs working there. I know there is an expansion of PA program there from Barry University out of Florida...

Thanks for all your help
