What is this bug?

I've been meaning to ask about this for a while, but when it happens, it's always the middle of the night, and I tend to forget about it by morning!

Several times now, I've been awakened by a VERY LOUD buzzing that I can only assume comes from some sort of bug. It sounds sort of like a locust or cicada, but MUCH louder. I mean to the point where it hurts my ears if I'm in the same room. (However, I'm not sure if it's actually in the house or right on the other side of an open window.)

What is this thing, and how do I make it stop?! I'm generally bug-tolerant, but not when they disrupt my sleep!

If it makes any difference, I'm on STX, north shore, waterfront.

It's a cricket, it's surprisingly small, and it is ear-splitting! When one of those critters is in or near the house we don't rest until we find it and remove it. It's light brown in color, usually a half inch long or a bit more, and good at hiding.
