What's in the South?

Hi again

Everywhere I look online, people talk about the East End or the North side of the island. Is there anything particularly wrong with the south or west ends? We (I know, like everyone else) would like a nice, quiet 3 bedroom on about an acre or so. Something inexpensive, of course, by SoCal standards. Yes, yes, I am totally naive and idealistic, I know. However, we want to live on St Thomas, not StX, because our entire extended family is also moving to STT, so we will have a local support system and all that. What do you think?

Cali,

I've found what I consider a wonderful little area on the South side called Frenchman's Bay. The rentals prices are very reasonable and it seems like a pretty safe area. Also, the view of the Caribbean is breathtaking and I noticed there's a constant breeze from the East.

I've ventured out to the West side a couple times. There seems to be a large community in Fortuna and somewhat in Estate Hope, but for the most part it doesn't seem very populated. I did notice in Fortuna that I did not have cell service on either my Cingular or Sprint PCS phones.

Hope this helps....

Chris

I can answer that one! I live(d) (we still own our home) in "south central" St. Thomas...I lived about 2-3 miles east of town on Estate Bakkeroe, which is where Flag Hill and Frenchman's Reef Hotel is. It's quiet, mostly families, and not a whole lot in the way of anything else. It takes about 5 minutes to get to Havensite, and about 10 minutes to get to Red Hook.

It's dry, not as humid as some places, and it's breezy, but not as windy as the North side. There are also not nearly as many bugs (too dry). The view is killer, and you can watch the cruise ships come in and out at night, and see the lights of Charlotte Amalie at night, which is quite pretty.

I loved it...it was quiet and safe, and not far from anything else without being right in the middle of it.

That's definitely my pick.

Besides Bakkeroe (near Morning Star Beach) and Frenchman's Bay (including the areas near Lime Tree Beach and Antilles School) there are areas such as Flag Hill, Hawk Hill, Bolongo, Bovoni, Nadir, Frydenhoj on out to Nazereth on the east end. On the south west, Fortuna, the area above and to the west of UVI (Bonne Esperance/Resolution? I am always confusing the Bonnes), Lindberg, Bournefield, John Dunkoe, Contant, Water Island, Hassel Island, etc. Lots of southerly tracts to investigate! An acre is a pretty large piece of land anymore, you will probably have more luck out west.

Great! Thanks so much - I now have a big list of places to investigate once we're on island!
