What's that smell on the Northside?

For a few weeks we, intermittently, smell a heavy wet charcoal kind of smell. I originally thought it might be the remnants of Mountain Top, but it's not. Anyone else smell this on other parts of the island? Could it be Montserrat?

Both the time-frame and the recent wind patterns would suggest that it might indeed be Soufriere Hills volcano on Montserrat. They've had major activity in the last few weeks. It's been quite noticeable over here on St Croix. At least it makes for beautiful sunsets...

There have been some people making charcoal the old fashioned way - a pit with a small smoke hole - in Santa Maria, Pearl and Bordeaux the last few months -- intense smell if you are down wind - a bit distressing in a residential neighborhood but its * cultural* .
