What are your favorite stores and where are they located for:

Mattresses
Furniture (NOT Silk Greenery prices)
Electronics
Appliances
Groceries
Odds + ends

Thanks!

Aego for Furniture
Appliance Plus for Appliances
Groceries - one ends up going all over - to all the stores for different things.

Odds & Ends - you can find just about anything at Cash & Carry in Four Winds Plaza (4WP). Depending on what you're looking for - Kmart, Island Fair (4WP), Cash & Carry, supermarkets, pharmacies.

I agree with Alana about groceries. One might have to go to several to find what you are looking for and for price comparision. Kmart does carry some groceries (I know you know that because you lived on Stx). They just had a Goya sale.

Aego is in Bovoni.
Appliance Plus - Time Center, Tutu.

Electronics - Electronics Unlimited (Weymouth Rhymer Highway), Radio Shack (Tutu Park Mall has newest store). Some buy at PriceSmart, CostULess, Kmart.

Above are just suggestions. I really don't have any favorite stores.. My favorite stores is where there is a good price for good quality.
And sales! :@)

Yes, Home Again in Red Hook Plaza.
Prices are high (I think) but you can get a good deal sometimes.
Check all the items for sale in the local papers, Daily News and Island Trader as there are always house sales going on.

I no longer purchase anything from the Arab owned furniture/appliance stores due to my own personal problems that I have had with quality, attitude and service.

Appliance Plus may be a bit more expensive for appliances than Home Depot, K-mart, etc but at least what they sell comes with the electrical cord for the appliances which other places you pay additional, they deliver for free, they honor the warranty, are available.
if there are any problems and for $50 extra will haul away your old appliance. Great customer service and products. Locally owned
business.

Humane Society No Flea Market ( across from Cost U More entrance at light) always has good buys on lots of different items, books, clothes CD's. children's toys, furniture, dishware, etc, plus the money helps them help the animals.

There's a new consignment store at Bulk Storage in Bovoni called Re-Use. Furniture, knick knacks, rugs, lamps, tools, etc. at very fair prices, much more so than Home Again IMO. Bought some things there when I moved into my new apartment recently and am very happy with all purchases...she has an ad in this week's Trader (and no, I'm not affiliated with the place!). Also used Macys.com for new dishes, cookware, bedding, small appliances, etc. (free shipping after $99.00 purchase and decent prices when they have a sale!) and Walmart.com for smaller household items, pharmacy stuff and groceries (also free shipping, I think after $45.00 purchase). Used to shop CVS.com, but have stopped since they changed their shipping carrier to FedEx Smart Post - takes FOREVER! House sales can also be worthwhile for appliances, electronics, odds and ends - check ads on Craig's List, the Trader and here on VINow.

Agree with above poster about needing to make several stops for groceries - KMart for pantry items and towels (again, when they're on sale!), Fruit Bowl for produce, Gourmet Gallery for Deli selections, Cost-U-Less for bulk goods, paper products, wine and alcohol.

I'm with Beachcomber, I go where I'll get the best quality for my $$ - and if that means shopping online, then that's what I'll do. While I'd love to support more of my local retailers, I just can't justify spending twice as much money for goods that are 1/2 the quality.

Now, if anyone can tell me where I can't get a nice 3'X5' rug without having to donate a kidney, I'd appreciate it!:@)

I have to say I love the rugs at Silk Greenery as they are reversible, which means if one side gets dirty, I can flip them over and when that side gets dirty, then wash. my doggies love them, too!
They only cost you half a kidney!

"Home Again" is apparently closing down.

Yard sales, yard sales, yard sales. The attrition of newbies is so high here and house sales can be a veritable treasure trove.

We have a Woman's Coalition Consignment store + Animal Shelter FLEA market on stx too - love that they support those organizations.

The woman from Re-Use has been on Tots On the Rock lately, so I'd heard about that one too.
Surprised that for a new place - they already have a good amount of stuff going.

Apparently they have been doing it for over a year and are now ready for advertising. Was there today and things were reasonable and they drop prices if they are there too long! A nice arm chair was $75 and in a month it will be $37.50! I do believe Home Again is closing since not being able to sell. Will double check that when I can,
I recommend Furniture Inn in Lockhart Gardens for furniture and they have wonderful appliances as well. Not sure of their repair abilities. That's why I buy from Appliances Plus. Their service department is the best.
Electronics are a crap shoot. Watch KMart pricing as sometimes there are really good deals. Name brands, go to Boolchand's.
Food is covered by most as I would say the same thing. Sucks to have to shop three places to get what you need.

I am not a huge fan of Furniture Inn in Lockhart Gardens. Don't buy mattresses from them.

I agree with Alana about the Arab run stores. Attitude, overpriced, quality not the best, but there are exceptions depending on what you are looking for.

I buy when I visit the states-sales!

Thanks for all the insight! Now I just have to learn my way around enough to know where these places are!
🙂

Tag sales and Home sales are fine for some stuff but since the baby is about to be the only one in our house with a "bed" - There are a few things that we need ASAP and don't wan't to push our luck trying to find.

I'm confused by this - why did you quote Beachcomber when you said it too?

What's wrong with their mattresses? The one across High School I wouldn't trustI. Furniture Inn yes. Not because they are tenants either.

I bought a brand new mattress from then 2 yrs ago and took it to the dumpster 2 weeks ago.
It wasn't cheap either and was supposed to be a good brand. It could not have been, hence it went to the dump as it got so lumpy and uncomfortable, I could not sleep thru the night without waking up with some body part hurting. Wasted $1000.00. Won'y buy from them again.

Guess it may have been one of those things. I have bought many mattresses from them and never a problem. Maybe yours was made on a Friday or Monday like cars in Detroit.

We're here! Had success with smaller items at ReUse. But no furniture.
Didn't get far today without baby having a breakdown... This process is no fun in general, add a teething 6 mo old into the mix...UHG.

What is the story with the mattress place in the strip mall near tutu (4 winds maybe?) ?
We Still need bedroom set, couch, tv, changing table, high chair, flatware, and probably a zillion other things.

And leads (other than the trader) are appreciated!

I've been gone from STT too long to help with furniture, appliances, etc. Just wanted to add to the thread, we always say how you have to shop at 3-4 different groceries on island to get what you need......

....Well, I'm in central FL now, and it's funny. My grocery list is in three parts, 1 for Publix, 1 for Fresh Market and 1 for Fernando's organic farm market. Some things never change. 🙂 But I do have to say, all are delightful and abundant!!

The mattress/bed store in Four Winds has very good prices comparable to stateside.

Check "furniture", "garage sales" and "appliances" on craigslistvi where some excellent deals pop up all the time.
