Which island??

Hi All,

I have been considering moving to the Caribbean for sometime now. I fell in love with both Puerto Rico and Aruba and have also been to the Bahamas and Dominican Republic. However, since I can only speak English it is rather difficult to find a job in Aruba or PR. I have read pretty much everything on this site, but I do have a few questions.

I am a 25 year old female and am a Certified Public Accountant. I have been leaning towards St Thomas because it has more of a nightlife and younger vibe to it. I will admit I do like to party on the weekends. However, I want to make sure I will be safe. Do you think St Thomas would be a good fit for me?

I do know a couple who lives in St Croix which would make it easier to meet people, but I am afraid I will get bored considering there isn't quite as much to do. I also like how you can travel to other islands with ease on St Thomas.

So I guess my question is which island do you think I should focus on?

I know a PMV is highly recommended, but I just don't think that option is feasible for me. I know I would love island life. It's everything I've dreamed of since Ive been in high school.

I have plenty of money saved up and my plan is to find a job in accounting before I move. Your comments and advice are greatly appreciated!

Yes, St. Thomas sounds best for you.

St. Croix is only for quiet people who don't go out often!

(Just kidding...)

I need to move to St Croix then. Maybe when they build the course at the new resort

Welcome, hwill.

If you're never been to the USVI, then you should do a PMV. Or at least give yourself the option of leaving after a few weeks if you don't like it, without wasting much cash and energy buying a car, getting a long-term apt. rental, giving up your old job or housing in the states, etc.

As for crime in the specific situations you're asking about: the later you stay out, and the more you drink, the more trouble you'll have. Some people make a point of getting home by 10pm.

Jeeze, a lot of my younger friends don't even think about going out until then.

I have stayed out past 10 exactly 2x in a year. I'm ready for St Croix I guess 😉

Pick your curfew, but in general, staying out late and partying tends to reduce your safety. Fights, robberies, crazy driving, almost no cops, etc.

That's not impossible but not realistic. Don't waste too much time job-seeking before you've moved here as the majority of employers won't even look at your credentials unless you're physically here.
