Hello, for those that had to decide between STT and STX, can I get some pros and cons of both and why you personally chose one over the other. Please lets not get into a ones better than the other war, there are parts of both islands i love and parts I hate, I am just looking for different points of view or should i say a different overall outlook, I am sure someone will bring up some issue I have yet to consider. Thanks in advance and Best wishes to all this Holiday season!

Peter

I like both but when I moved here it was for a job. After I was here, I was offered a job in STX but decided to stay here which turned out to be a good thing - for me, careerwise. Both have advantages & disadvantages but STT is a better fit for me.

Just remembered, I was also offered a job on STJ after I was here for a while & still decided to stay on STT.

I like both islands as well. It's a little cheaper to live on STX (Real Estate Prices, RE Tax, Gas Price and some food items). The atmosphere is alot more laid back on STX. I think STT is a little more cosmopolitan. I like the beaches better on STT. However the Golf is better on STX. So, Old like me "STX is just fine." If I were younger STT would be the place.

Island hopping is easier from STT.

Thanks everyone, I am considering the pros & cons of both jobs and I think that is going to determine the Island which is leaning heavily toward STX, First I heard to stay away from F..sted, is it the drugs and crime? Good stuff anyone else have thoughts , please speak up.

I'm a 60 year old female who goes to F'sted alone about once a week to sit on the beach and have lunch. I've never had any trouble. I suggest you withhold judgements about the islands in general until you get here.

I am a 20-something year old female who lives in Frederiksted, who works in Frederiksted, goes to the beach in Frederiksted, hangs out at the local bars and restaurants at night in Frederiksted (sometimes I leave the house solo but always end up with some friends wherever I end up) and have never had problems. There is most likely less crime in F'sted as C'sted--more in c'sted since there are more people. I actually feel FAR LESS safe out east than in F'sted. If you stay away from drugs anywhere you won't have any trouble regarding them anywhere. No one is going to approach you here and thrust crack in your face or something.

Frederiksted is a great little town for those people who take the time to get to know it and its inhabitants. Those people who say stay away or stay out east must have some other agenda...talk to locals, transplants, white, black, lawyers, office workers, doctors, bartenders, biologists, teachers, construction workers, mothers, fathers --there are many many of them that live in Frederiksted and the West End and most will tell you that they enjoy and feel safe in the West End and Frederiksted.

People who say stay away and don't back it up with real life experience, evidence and what not should not be listened to anyway because they either 1) don't have such experience which therefore makes their opinions useless 2) have experience but don't want to elaborate which again, makes their opinions useless.

Here is a plus for St. Croix many may have not thought of - they have a great bowling alley! St. Thomas has a bowling alley but it is only open Fri-Sat-Sun and lanes break a lot.

Jewelygirl, that is a little nasty. Talonz82 only wanted to know which island had what kind of local flavor and why people picked their island. Others turned it into a "dump on Fsted", not Talonz82.

There are many differences between the two islands, and it seemed talonz82 wanted to get a feel for that.

STT has more shopping, more jobs in the service / hotel industry, closer to island hop, more hilly, and maybe better beaches, and better sailing due to less reefs. It does however IMHO have more traffic, tourists, t-shirt, jewelery, and liquor shops, it's more crowded as it is half the size but the same population.

Stx is more rural, more rolling hills, quaint, and friendlier (IMHO). It has more jobs in industry with Hovensa, cheaper fuel , land, and housing.

Wow jewelrygirl...you don't have to be nasty!

I didn't say I didn't like STX. I absolutely love living in c'sted. The people are friendlier, the city is much prettier AND CLEANER. It is a simple matter of fact that it is safer in c'sted. I had a friend who recently moved back to the states. Him and his buddy were mugged as they left the Lost Dog. I have known couples who were mugged AT GUNPOINT in f'sted!!

When I moved to STX, I lived in White Lady for two years because I didn't have much money. That was all that I could afford. I hung out in f'sted all the time. But you can sure bet, as soon as I could afford it...I got outta there!!

F'sted should be leveled and started over, that's all.

Hugo already leveled a lot of F'sted back in 1989.

I know people mugged in C'sted and the North Shore AT GUNPOINT. It has happened all over. Should those places be leveled too? Your bias against F'sted is extreme and agonizingly rude--those are people's homes and businesses that you think should be leveled. Many of those people have worked very hard to maintain their businesses and keep things alive in F'sted. Would you be happy if another Hugo came and destroyed the town all over again? Perhaps you would like that hurricane to level your house out east too?

As for the mugging outside Lost Dog--I used to work there and left at all hours god knows how many times. Never with a problem. Perhaps your friends were simply unlucky. I also have not heard of two people getting mugged on King Street after leaving recently unless they were around the corner on Queen Street or on a side street being stupid.

jewelrygirl, stxem

Please don't turn this tread into a beef against me...

I am sure my friend was being stupid when he left the lost dog...he was mugged along with one of the (managers or owners i forget which) so you must know the story if you worked there.

I would be upset if a hurricane took my house. But that is why I bought a home in c'sted. Homes are much, much nicer and property values are much, more expensive. Just look at any homebuyers website. The insurance payment would be through the roof!! (parden the pun)

I admit, I haven't lived in f'sted for many years now, but my work takes me there at least two or three times a month. It gets worse and worse...and that's during the day!!! I guess it could be considered nicer when it is dark and hard to see out 🙂

p.s. most of north shore is not considered c'sted, you know.

Thanks everyone, wether your comments were good or bad, its nice to see people passionate about who they are and where they reside, I'm going to do a PMV and have a real good look around, I am still going to have to make the choice between STT & STX, I am at the age where I'm old enough to know better but too young to care, peace to all of you during this time of year and i will make my announcement soon I hope.

Cheers,

Peter

Whatever Julie B. Believe what you believe. Others can decide for themselves.

p.s. I too live here. Your original post insinuated that areas on island where muggings occur should be leveled. Just letting you know that there other areas besides f'sted where such occurrences happen.

Cheers!

P.P.S. Just talking to some friends of mine--are you the same Julie Barstow that is a real estate agent in Christiansted that only deals with properties out east? Lives in Solitude now? Tried to claim the Turtles Deli was once robbed when it never was?

That might explain the bias and the agenda.

Nope, not her. I am not even a realtor (I have always been horrible at sales jobs).

I didn't even know that there was another Julie Barstow. Small island, even smaller world. So keep reaching for a way to discredit me. Any smart person can see that what I say is correct.

Even though I am not a realtor, I can see where the property values are. So go back to "FrederiksDead" and wait to get mugged. I'll be partying at the Brew Pub!!

I hope that the guy who came up with FrederiksDead doesn't mind if I use it too. It is kinda catchy.

Back to the original thread. STX is a good fit for me but I can see why STT is popular with others. You can come and go from there more easily with better air service and ferry service to STJ and the BVI. When you are on STX you are ON STX. So you had better like it because it a'int so easy to leave. Personally, I love Frederiksted too.

"Fredricksdead" was the term I heard from a local STX business person.
They weren't referring to crime or the people who live there. They were commenting on the shuttered downtown. Important to note to Talonz that STX is a big island compared to STT, and Fsted is only one part of it.

re: the flare-up about Fsted on the board... everywhere I've lived people have debated one town over the other. Pretty natural.

I've noticed that people live everywhere I've ever been, so I've assumed that everywhere has something for some. Does that make sense?

Thank god what appeals to one person doesn't appeal to the next or we'd all live in the same place.
