Hello. I am new to the board. I have been lurking for about 6 months now and have read many topics on this board. There is so much information. So I am in the beginning stages (mental stages) about moving to st croix. I have been to both st thomas and st croix and do like each one. I am trying to learn about the different locations on st croix and where would be a good place to buy a house. Does anyone have any advice on living in the williams delight area. I have read negative and positive things about this location. There are several properties in that area that I am interested in. I have not found anyone that actually lives in that area. Some people say this is a rough area with a lot of crime and others say it depends on where you live in this area. Maybe someone here on this board lives in this area or knows someone that does. I have so many other questions about other different topics but will start with this simple one. Any advice would be a great help. Thank you.

This is an 'interesting' wiki page on Williams Delight. I've lived on the island for a couple months now, and I never knew the area is/could be as bad as the wiki page says it is.

I live in the Morningstar area (up near Salt River Bay) and I absolutely love it. The area is quiet (except for roosters), and is generally in a good central location to town, the hospital, the various grocery stores/K-mart. Have you looked at any places up in this area? I rent a cottage, so I'm not sure what properties are for sale or how much they are.

Williams Delight area is listed on the Police Log in the paper daily! Well, if not, daily, then, almost daily. I wouldn't feel safe in that area.

Just my opinion so don't jump on me about it.

xenna, I will guess that you are interested in that area because the houses are lower priced that other areas.

There is a reason for that, as you will be finding out.

i have never heard of those things happening, sounds like a pre judgmental tourist. or a non visitor who has been given glorified accounts of what really happened. i must say, i laughed through the article in WIKI.

not to say crime never happens there, but come on

xenna,

We live a few miles west of Williams Delight for the last nine years. As with most areas on St. Croix there are good and bad spots. "Main Street" [near Kmart West] is a difficult area and we hear shooting from there on most evenings. The police do patrol the area quite a bit but as soon as they leave, well you know.

There are many places in the Williams Delight area that are fine but again you need to be on island to check out whatever you might have as an interest. The Wiki article is what I would call "over the top". We are not night owls and with that we have never had a problem with the area.

Thank you for your interest in St. Croix.

Yeah it seems that part of the wiki was written by some anonymous ( Kslyinno ) person back in Oct 2012. Do the kids celebrate Halloween on STX? I don't remember much for the holiday as a kid on STT...

I had an uncomfortable incident while driving down the main road that goes through Williams Delight several years ago. I was slowing down for one of the many speed bumps and a group of 4 kids on bicycles came speeding towards me. As I went over the bump they began to circle the car and bump into it. I rolled down my window and told them they better watch out because in a fight my car beat their bikes. I guess since I didn't come off as intimidated they decided to take off (either that or it was because of me speeding up and nearly taking one of them out!).

Thanks for all the advice. I will definitely check out that area when I come down there next month. I plan on checking on several areas. I am going real slow and researching, researching researching and visiting, visiting and visiting in the next year. I read the wiki article and wow. That was interesting. And yes those houses in that area are cheaper which is why I was checking the area out. We are looking for something that needs maybe some improvements but still livable but in a location where I feel comfortable .We are going back and forth about buying land and building vs buying a possible fixer upper. Thanks again and I have many other questions but will post different threads about those.

Contact a STX Realtor to help you with your search. They know the island, the neighborhoods, the market and what is available in your price range.

If you buy a fixer,...make sure it will be worth something when you're done. Location, location, location...

I will definitely contact a Realtor and discuss different options. Good point on location and fixing it up. If something happened and I needed to rent out the house long term or sale it (which I hope I would never have to do) the location would very much matter. I would not want to get a house in a bad section and try to rent or sale it if I needed to do that. It would probably be hard to market. Much to think about and see.

The murder was Wednesday night before midnight.
The worst part of Williams delight is the Mosquitos. Dengue deaths.
It is largely an immigrant community and there is public housing in the middle of the hood.
It is also extremely flood prone, which contributes to mosquito growths.
Rent first and get to know the island.
The closest nice neighborhood to them is Carlton.
Frederikshaab is nice too.

I agree. Get a realtor.
