watching the 3 videos posted by "Tonia" on youtube and I have to say that it looks as tho Marriott's hurricane prep and executed plan was extremely well-thought out, and as accommodating as possible. Guests are somewhat comfortable in ballrooms and lobbies, food available, games to keep occupied, and frequent updates. Everyone looked calm and relaxed.

Cannot say the same for the Elysian who apparently threw people in a room with a couple bottles of water, NO SHUTTERS, and were like "good luck!"

I know hotels prepare for this (or SHOULD), but I don't think I've ever seen one in action, so I'm very impressed with the Marriott and hope tourists know that the hotel tried to make the best out of a very bad, dangerous situation, and that "this little hurricane incident" doesn't leave a bad feeling about STT. I know this isn't the biggest fish to fry right now, but as a rental unit, I obviously have the loss of that revenue on my mind....

Old timers: how soon did the tourists come back after the big storms?

We went to STT/STJ in '96 or '97 after Marilyn. I remember seeing a lot of the remaining destruction, including Coral World looking like a bomb dropped on it.

If we have power on STT by end of the year in many place I would call it a Christmas miracle. It was at least a year or more before stuff started happening again and that was way less damage to the island than what we have now... Many of the resort hotels have experienced extensive damage. Havent been in downtown area yet. STX may be getting for ship calls in the future.....

We learn from mistakes and failures so it's reasonable to expect an improvement in the recovery but the beating Florida is going to take as well as the other islands won't help.
Maybe this time they will put up more concrete power poles.

Never happen. We already are stepchildren and now that the word of "The US Virgin Islands" is devastated in most peoples mind is STT / STJ nobody will even think about STX as usual. Actually we will be hurt more so from no cruise ships over there as we won't get our tree fiddy sent to us from government there to pay Mapps bar and restaurant tab.

I've already seen a lot of inquiries from folks that were planning on going to STT/STJ or BVI for vacation over the next few months asking about going to STX instead.

I'm urging my cancelling guests to book cruises in lieu of a stay at my place in the next few months. A. They took a hit too and B. They can at least move out of the way if weather is happening and the way this hurricane season is shaping up, that's a nice attribute.
