A sad reality of life in the USVI

I realize that bigotry and racism exist in every society, and I certainly see it in many people I know. But I like to think that most people at least try to recognize their prejudices and compensate for them. So when I see something as blatant as the exchange below between two of our Senators in a public setting and there is absolutely no show of outrage or disapproval by any of their peers, then it is hard not to suspect that Senator Hansen's beliefs are widely shared by her peers. And you have to question whether the government really represents all the citizens of the USVI. The quoted exchange below is from an article in the STX Source today:

Sanes and Sen. Alicia "Chucky" Hansen had a blow-up during the reading of the bill.

As Sanes and other senators struggled to pronounce multiple paragraphs of convoluted chemical names such as "1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole" and "2-[1R,3S)-3-hydroxycyclohexyl]-5-(2-methyloctan-2-yl)phenol)," Hansen offered to read the bill several times, saying her "specialty is phonics."

Sanes said Sen. Craig Barshinger, a member of the majority with Sanes, had a scientific background and asked him to read the bill. Hansen then stormed out of the room, shouting at Sanes: "Where is your blackness?"

Sanes took offense at the suggestion he was betraying people of color by asking a white senator to read the bill and said he chose Barshinger because Barshinger was a member of the majority and had a scientific background.

Sanes and Hansen argued for several minutes. Afterward, Sanes apologized for getting angry and said he knew Hansen "didn't mean it like that." Hansen then reiterated that she did, in fact, mean to say Sanes was racist against people of color such as himself and that he chose Barshinger instead of her because Barshinger is white and she is not.

Dam. And I always thought that I was one of Chucky's 'my people', being a law abiding, tax paying, US citizen, registered voter, and resident of St. Croix. How could I have been so easily fooled by this warm charming character who was secretly an outspoken bigot all this time? In the end I'm just a politically abused and misguided whitey, albeit with a nice tan. 😎

I've only felt too pink a couple of times, it's definitely there; but thankfully most the citizens conduct themselves better than the politicians

Phonics? How does one "specialize in "phonics"?
Kinda like claiming a specialty in "addition".

She represents her people. They agree with her way of thinking.

On another topic. When someone talks about a "minority" owned business in the VI who are they talking about?

I am not surprised at Chucky Hanson simply being what she is. What I find surprising is that absolutely no one voiced any opposition to what she said. Not one Senator said that her remarks were inappropriate or that they found such an idea offensive, or at least the voicing of that idea offensive. I realize that Chucky has her following, just as every bigoted politician in the states has their own true believers - ignorant people are everywhere. But the fact that none of our political leaders will speak out against such in your face bigotry is what I find most disappointing.

I'll take the bait. As we are a territory of the US, the premise of minority is seen under the total population, which is certainly not representative here in St. Croix and perpetuates an inaccurate stereotype. By no means an expert, I gathered from a of sociology class way back a little broader understanding of race as applied to social issues and problems. However some of the basic tenants of determining minority status are not applicable here, especially when trying to understand why the Chucky's of this land act the way they do. I certainly don't see her as representative of the general population. She is definitely playing to a base which unfortunately is large enough, and politically prodded, to keep her in office regardless of character and ability.

Chucky is simply atrocious and "her people" aren't smart enough to realize that she's not doing a damn thing for them.

I would really like to know if she served her community hours for her tax evasion conviction, and whether she is paying her back taxes.

Chucky and Adelbert Bryan should go start a new country together, or something....

Chucky was, if i remember correctly, the second highest stx senatorial vote-getter in 2010, and the highest in 2012. In the election for the constitutional convention delegates, Adelbert Bryan got the most votes. And some think that their opinions are not the opinions of the general populace??
Some years ago, Chucky was involved in a big public controversy on stx. At the time I was really shocked at the number of local business people I heard privately supporting her talk and actions, which were totally racist...some of them were people I did and still do business with, but I have never forgotten how they really think.
