I'm going to have to find another article to post so we can get more recipes! How about a saltfish and fungi one next?

I'm making Pastelles this weekend.

I'll post the recipe if I'm satisfied with the results.

Trump picks climate sceptic Pruitt for environment chief
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38247085

Simply appalling.
Talk about filling the swamp with monsters!
We need more environmental protection, not less.
I saw a map yesterday of all the leaks and oil spills in America and it was mind boggling. These companies get millions in subsidies, pollute our lands and waters, wreak an obscene number of environmental damage upon us while taxpayers end up paying for clean up and the mess they leave behind.

We need clean energy not more drilling, fracking, mining.
We need to protect our environment.

Arroz con Gandules - Rice & Pigeon Peas

Serves 4
Prep time: 25 min.
Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients
1 tbsp. GOYA® Extra Virgin Olive Oil
¼ lb. country ham, cubed
½ green bell pepper, chopped (about ½ cup)
½ yellow onion, chopped (about ½ cup)
2 packets Sazón GOYA® with Coriander and Annatto
1 tbsp. GOYA® Minced Garlic
2 tsp. finely chopped fresh cilantro
1 tsp. GOYA® Oregano
1½ cups GOYA® Medium Grain Rice
1 can (15 oz.) GOYA® Green Pigeon Peas
4 oz. GOYA® Tomato Sauce
1/4 cup GOYA® Manzanillas Olives Stuffed with Minced Pimientos, sliced
Directions
1. Heat oil in a medium, heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Add ham to pan; cook until brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in peppers and onions; cook, stirring occasionally, scraping up brown bits from bottom, until vegetables are soft and translucent, 10 minutes. Add sazón, garlic, cilantro and oregano. Cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
2. Add rice to pan. Cook, stirring frequently, until coated in oil and toasted, about
1 minute. Stir in pigeon peas, tomato sauce, olives and 1½ cups water; using a wooden spoon, stir once and bring rice mixture to a boil. Cook, uncovered, until water is evaporated, about 10 minutes. Gently stir rice from bottom up.
3. Lower heat to medium low and cook, covered, until rice is tender, about 15 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat. Gently fluff rice with fork. Cover pan and let stand 5 minutes.

Alana33, your a hypocrite. Stop spewing your hate messages because you dislike Trump. We get it. You state above you don't want more drilling etc, but when the refinery was reopened and jobs were to be had and more more for the economy it was all good. So which is it? Protect our environment? Or support our people through jobs?

Here's your qoute btw:

And instead of paying down our immense debt, they'll no doubt squander the money.

Glad for STX that this will soon come to its conclusion and hopefully mean additional jobs and income for the island.

You can't have both. Stop with your hate, its making you look foolish.

Well this particular pick made me question it as well. I would have rather seen someone more middle of the road than a left wing nut job or a right wing nut job. I agree, there needs to be some regulation, but not as much as we have now. Like the Dakota pipeline, I was sympathetic to the native Indian fight up until it was posted that they have changed the direction of the pipeline over 100 times just to try and make them happy. But the only thing that will make them happy is NO PIPELINE.

Dave, I don't personally attack you or call you a hypocrite, etc., so knock the crap off with the name calling. If anyone is or has been spewing hate filled messages, it is your preferred candidate elect.

Do I think we need to have clean energy, protect the air we breathe, clean water which we cannot do without and an environment healthy enough to continue to sustain humans, plant and wildlife? You betcha?
Can this be done thru clean energy? You betcha!
Can clean energy, job creation and protecting the environment go hand in hand? You betcha! However, not with this president elect.

There are enough oil supplies without further drilling and destruction of the environment, especially if we embrace cleaner energy.
We're all foolish if we don't.

Personally, I think trump is snake oil salesman and y'all been sold a bill of goods with buyer's remorse to soon come.

I suggest you look up the amount of oil spills and related deaths there are annually and over the course of the years. Only a miniscule fraction make headlines.

Cruzan: can't wait for the Pastelles recipe.
I love those!

Cruzan Iron,
I've always wanted those recipes from a local. You really don't know who wrote the cook books that claim local recipes.
Also a great response to a worn out post.

Thank you

This gives a pretty good overview:

Dakota Access Pipeline

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_Access_Pipeline
Quote:

"It remains unclear what specifically happens if the pipeline leaks, how residents would know of a leak, why the company asks for a permanent easement of farmland when oil rights can be obtained only for 25 years at a time, who the majority shareholders of Dakota Access are, where Energy Transfer's guarantee of liability for newly established Dakota Access, LLC is, and if it is required to have only a $250,000 bond in case of damages.[51] Sunoco Logistics, the future operator of the pipeline, has spilled crude oil from its onshore pipelines more often since 2010 than any other US pipeline operator, with at least 203 leaks disclosed to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration,[84] with a total of 3406 net barrels of crude oil spilled."

I also question that pick. Most I am happy with. That one will run into trouble for sure I think.
However the pipeline is almost done and it will not be cancelled. There are already plenty others upstream from this one. This makes about as much sense as the failed recount.

We need clean energy not more drilling, fracking, mining.

Don't worry so much, it's just going to implode as the increased fracking and lower natural gas prices continue to put the minors out of work. We'll piss of China so they won't want our coal either. They will start fighting each other. A few more Love Canals and we'll come around and start fixing things all over again. Maybe Ivanka will knock some sense into them.

Donald Trump is going to get somebody killed

But now we have to seriously ask how long it’s going to be before his vindictiveness gets somebody killed."

A lot of miners are already out of work. My friend is an engineer on one of the major locomotive companies and in the past 18 months they have had to lay many people off due to the lack of coal production. So it's already hurting the miners and also other industries as well.

Yeah, cause their asses will be out of a job.

Since they did such a great job here:

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/10/431223703/epa-says-it-released-3-million-gallons-of-contaminated-water-into-river

http://www.isssource.com/epa-mistakes-led-to-chemical-fire/

Believe me, I want a safe and clean environment, but we are dependent upon fossil fuels. We do need controls, but not over control of our gov't. It happens locally too. A guy I know built a man made pond on his farm land. The EPA found out and told him that he didn't get the proper approvals and would need to make it as it was. He is still fighting this in court. I also don't believe in climate change, because we have to small a sampling for a planet that is 4+ billion years old. And I'm a huge believer in science, but think climate change has been blown out of proportion.

We'll never get away from our dependency on fossil fuels if we don't make the change to cleaner energy and that creates jobs protects the environment and us.

We're screwing up the planet and that's a plain and simple fact.
Did you look at the time elapse video on all the oil spills?
Do you not want your drinking water protected from toxins?

I lived near Kenai and went to the Exxon valdeze spill site... Looks BEAUTIFUL there, can't tell anything happened...

I've been to the gulf of mexico recently as well, same thing...

So reality says something much different than what your saying....... Know why? Oil is NATURAL.. and EVERYWHERE! nature knows how to take care of it far better than we do.

Do you not want your drinking water protected from toxins?

Do you want to live in fear constantly?

More Than 300 A Year: New Analysis Shows Devastating Impact of Pipeline Spills

I've seen dozens of pipeline spills... they are small, cleaned up & have little impact on wild life... I've seen this first hand, I used to hang out with slick line workers and my roommate was an OSHA guy for the north slope in Alaska.. all my drinking buddies were oil workers.

I've been to the Alaska pipeline hundreds of times... this fear is baseless from my real life experience.

Scientific opinion on climate change

Is it climate change or global warming?

or is it just fear porn leveraged to keep the rich "rich" and the poor where they "belong"?

Global warming clingers are going to be in for a damn surprise as we head into a mini-ice age (that has ZERO tod o with humanity.. and everything to do with a grand solar minimum we are going into currently).

Humanity is far less significant than you think.

I'm not fearful.
Personally, I think we deserve everything we get as we're a plague upon this planet. We don't respect it, our environment, our wildlife, each other
or anything natural on it. It's really too bad.
