Have you ever noticed the guys standing out in front of K-mart and Pueblo and Plaza, etc selling bootleg DVDs and CDs? Have you ever wondered why this is not stopped? They are doing it openly, not even any attempt to hide what they are doing. Isn't this illegal?

Since we all have phones with cameras in them these days, I propose that we start taking pictures of any unlawful activity that we see going on around the islands and post the pictures here on the moving center. Post any suspicious activity.

Start noticing illegal activity and pointing it out!

Jamison should take a photo of Shorty (from the DASHI post) on the boardwalk and post it here so we can all see what he looks like.

FWIW, the two minors ran out of Dashi and ran into the cops right away. They then turned on the "adult". The adult is Shorty. He hangs on the board walk. He has jumped two people I know, one of which is a good friend and he beat her up bad. He is garbage, but has family in government, so I'm sure he'll be right back to the boardwalk. He is also the one who robs people by Angry Nates. 99.9% of the people here are great caring people, but because of family, this scumbag will keep doing this until he kills somebody, then maybe he'll get a year in jail to really become dangerous.

I bought 6 movies from them for 4$.... yesterday

On my last deployment one of the biggest sellers at the "hodgie" shop was boot leg DVD's.. and that was on a military post.

How about we focus on serious issues, like violent crime, or this "shorty" person.

As I learned being a parent, and in the military... "pick your battles", it surely applies here aslo.

Actually, when I was buying movies from them a few weeks ago, I asked one of the guys why the police don't bother them. Since its a federal crime, the local police don't get involved. And their operation is so small that the feds aren't really interested.

Like LF said, there are bigger fish to fry on many different levels.

If someone went to the police department and wanted to sign a complaint about the people selling boot leg tapes, they the police would be required to take action. So LF says it's cool no problem, I bought them yesterday here on STX and on an Army post overseas. One thing I learned there is no such thing as being a little pregnant, that applies to crime as well. I wonder what LF and stxem have in mind about the bigger fish? You guys going to play vigilante and stop the gangs drug dealings, shoot outs, assaults, robberies, etc.?

You're part of the problem. Wrong is wrong and right is right, bootlegging is wrong.

I'm working on it. They have a pic of him at Nates. When I get it, I'll post it.

THANKS Jamison!!!!

It will help to know the face of at least one of the many thugs out there! We've all probably passed by him on the boardwalk one time or another, not knowing how dangerous he is.

With some 4,500 Federal laws and around 300,000 federal regulations (not to mention state, county, town, territory laws) do you think YOU haven't violated some law, even today?

Lets see how our criminal system is doing

List of countries by incarceration rate
Rank Country (or dependent territory) Prisoners per
100,000 population

1 United States of America 716

2 St. Kitts and Nevis 649

3 Seychelles 641

4 Virgin Islands (USA) 539

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate

The United States had some 12 million (12,000,000) reported crimes in 2012, the highest in the world by far

http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-top-ten/countries-with-highest-reported-crime-rates.html

Yeah, we need to arrest more people, that's clearly working!

So we have an INSANELY large number of illegal activities in our country via laws & regulations, the largest incrimination rate in the world and the largest crime rate in the world.

Anyone see a corrilation here? anyone find the phrase " USA, home of the free" or "Land of freedom" a bit ironic?

I sure hope you good doers are all slowing down to 35 mph before the lights on the 4 lane (since I've NEVER seen ANYONE do it you must not drive often) Speeding is against the law too.. and it's actually dangerous and could harm people.

I don't think the world is black and white, I think it's shades of grey.

LF,
Speeding is a motor vehicle violation not a crime. Buying stolen property is a crime. So you participate in criminal activity and point fingers at others. That's not the cowboy way is it.

Tapes? haha...

my crime spree seems to keep people busy slinging coppied intelectual property from a multi-billion dollar industry; at least they are busy doing that and not other things (robbing businesses on the board walk, selling drugs, breaking into houses etc..)

This economy is in the crapper; I don't mind supporting a few creative minded individuals,it gives me more time to spend polishing my spurs and getting my sadle ready for my next ride!

YEEEHAW! (i guess?)

Thanks for letting us know what real crime is. Maybe we can take some property from the banks, no big deal they have lots of money.Being that you are in the VI Army National Guard didn't you have to take an oath to uphold all the Laws of the USVI and the US.. Or is there a supplement that allows you to select what laws you will follow.

Speaking as someone who earns part of her keep in publishing, and spends too much time stopping people from earning money based on my work, I'm amazed that people on here have no problem admitting to their thievery. Just because the crime is not violent, and you can get away with it, does not make it OK. Theft is theft. Not something to be so cavalier about, or to be proud of.

OK I admit it. In my youth I used to tape songs off the radio for my own personal pleasure. 😎

But I'm also astounded at the blatent disreagard for the law. Even if the bootlegging is a federal offence and the local police don't want to get involved in, I bet the DLCA "police" in thier shiny "patrol" cars don't even check these guys for a valid business license.

its illegal to copy money, but if you want to photo copy money you go right ahead.

I took an oath to uphold the constitution.

If I bought bootleg dvd's is it illegal, yes. If I go 1mph over the speed limit is it illegal, yes. if I sell raw milk is it illegal, yes. In oregon if I wear my hat backwards is it illegal, yes. Don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign, yep that's illegal too. Anyone on this ISLAND use turn signals (not using them is illegal also...). I think there's a lot of "issues" here that need addressing & prioritization is one of them perhaps.

Maybe I'm just too honest for some people. I'd rather be berated and truthful than hypocritical and not.

I'll set my shovel down now, I think I've dug deep enough.

I think you should read the Constitution of the United States. You admitted to your criminal actions. Why don't you go to your AG and tell him about your activities, do you think he will just berate you. Stop pointing fingers to justify your lack of a moral compass. You are correct, you did dig deep enough.

I asked the blockbuster manager about the guys selling dvd's. He reports to consumer affairs and the police. They shoo the guys away for a while and they return.
I am surprised pueblo and Kmart mangement allows those guys to do that on the property.
I refuse to buy out of principle, it's so blatantly wrong.

Do you think that these guys only do this one thing or are involved in larger perhaps violent crimes as well that are harder to prove? I really don't know them so I really am wondering. If they were thought to be involved in other crimes that are harder to prove this could be a way to get them off the streets, like tax evasion and Capone. But of course even that would require actual police and court action.

As someone stated IP infringement is more enforced at the federal level than local. Don't really know if there is even a statute in the VI code that would cover it.

I found this on Wiki Copyright Infringement responsibility saying enforcement is responsibility of the copyright holder, but at the same time there is a new government agency that also is tasked with IP infringement link is here. I think that the government gets more involved if the operation is proved to be crossing borders because then they can claim national security. The only real IPR actions that I have heard of were domain seizures from time to time and it has caused a stink because the domains were not located in the US so there is the issue of US overstepping their bounds.

I would guess that some of these people are indeed involved in more than just the bootlegs but it would have to be proven. The one thing that has always interested me is where they are getting the copies from. Duplicators cost a pretty penny in some cases and there is also the time involved in the production of the copies. Not saying it can't be done in the VI but I have my doubts...
