I want to buy my hubby a new Kindle for Christmas, but want to upgrade him to the Kindle Fire HD. Does anyone out there have the new Kindle Fire HD that can help with some questions?

Amazon site state: "If you're travelling with Kindle Fire HD, you can access any content you've downloaded to your device or shop for new books and magazines anytime you like.

With a U.S. credit card, you'll also be able to purchase new apps and music for Kindle Fire HD while you are abroad.

To purchase, download, or stream movies and TV shows, you must be physically present in the U.S. and have a U.S. billing address.

Has anyone tried to stream movies, etc. on the Kindle in the Virgin Islands - and have you been successful or does the Amazon statement hold true?

Are there any other restrictions (other than shipping) that may be a problem in the US Virgin Islands with the Kindle Fire?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I'm using my KindleFire HD right now. Love it. The issue about not being able to stream movies from Amazon doesn't just apply to the Kindle - you can't do it from a computer either.

I have a router setup here with a VPN service that makes my traffic appear to be coming from Florida. If you are interested PM me and I can get you information on getting that setup.

FWIW, the VPN service I am using (HMA Pro VPN) is having a sale for Christmas where you can get a year for $49.99.

To stream from Amazon Prime in the VI you do need to have a stateside IP. To purchase PPV and other videos you also must have a US billed credit card.

Netflix does allow you to stream to the USVI with a local IP.

As mentioned by another poster there are methods to get around this, but it involvesinstalling a VPN on your wireless router and paying monthly/annual fees to a VPN provider. Running a VPN on your router can reduce your download speed by 20-30% so if you have a slow internet connection streaming video using a VPN may result in lots of buffering.

There are free ways to do it on a PC where you can run some software, but it is trickier on a Kindle Fire, or at least the one I have, where you can't run a VPN or something else and therefore you need to set the connection up using your router. My wife's Ipad on the other hand can connect using VPN so it is possible to stream video from Amazon directly.

I have tried free methods in the past an my experience wasn't good. The connections were slow and variable so streaming wasn't worthwhile.

I might just not be in the right place on Netflix but I can never seem to find any remotely recent movies.

I've decided to move ahead with buying a Kindle Fire HD. For those of you that have them, is it only the Prime streaming that doesn't work? What about if you purchase a movie or a TV show? I know I can buy movies and TV shows on iTunes here and I don't have any issues, so I'm assuming that it should be the same.

So any other warnings other than the Prime streaming? Thanks everyone!

Edited to add: I've seen them selling the Kindle Fire (not the HD) in the AT&T store at Sunny Isles. I'm surprised they would sell it here if it doesn't work here?

You should really check out the Google Nexus 7. It does everything that the Kindle does plus. It has all of the reader apps, Kindle, Nook, Play, Alkido, etc. And it has all of the Movie apps, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Crackle, etc. And it is very fast. A quad-core processor instead of dual-core. The very latest version of Android instead of an old version. Same price.

Radio Shack carries them. $199 for 16GB or $249 for 32GB.

I love mine.

You can overcome most location based streaming problems by using "Hide My Ass". I use it with my Nexus 7 to stream movies that are available only in the states. VUDU, etc.

Thanks! I've decided on the Kindle Fire HD for several reasons, and I'm not put off the issue with Prime, I can work around it. I just want to make sure there are no other issues that I don't know about yet. I've also ordered it already! Whoops! 😀

Rotor, on the HMA, how does that work? Do we have to install it on each computer? Or just one and it takes care of the rest? We have a wireless router and our devices just attach via wifi.

HMA is a VPN service. You can either set up your household router to connect to them then everything in your house appears to be almost anywhere in the world that you wish. Your router must support VPN peer-to-peer.

OR, you can install a VPN client on each computer. For my Nexus 7 you manually configure it as per their instructions and then each client can be local or in the states as you wish.

You really should have considered the Nexus 7.

Thanks! I figure I'll get it and see what I run into. We'll consider a VPN if there's enough of a benefit. Honestly I don't stream that much stuff, I buy a few TV shows, but that's about it. It's more just if there was something I wanted. In general I want the other features a lot more than a tablet device.

Out of curiosity, what other features are offered by the Kindle Fire HD that are not available to other tablets?

For me it's the screen. It reads differently because the way the glass is installed. I'm good without the "e-ink" but I do prefer a more matte reader on my old eyes, especially in high light situations. My primary use isn't as a tablet, it's as a reader. The other stuff is just extra for me. I do watch a TV show on it now and then when I travel but that's about it. Otherwise I use the PC when I'm writing Go Local posts and my phone for "on the go" FB, Twitter, and other updates, as well as picture taking, since its more portable.

I also like the Kindle lending library and my husband and I can share books, which we like to recommend to each other. He already has a Kindle.

I'm curious for anyone who has bought a Kindle ereader -- Amazon offers a 2-year replacement protection plan for 30 bucks. Has anyone bought and tried to use this coverage here? It's not immediately clear from their site whether the USVI is excluded, and I don't see an easy way to find out without doing a lot of digging, so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone had experience with it. Thanks in advance.

never mind, just found the relevant paragraph finally. 9. LIMITATIONS OF COVERAGE – This Contract Does Not Cover:
A. Any Product located outside the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Bummer.
