I am looking to come back to STX with my family of 4 for the winter and we are hoping to find someone with an extra car or maybe someone leaving island for a while and would want someone to take care of their car and make a little extra cash. Please message me if you or anyone you know might have something like this. Thank you!!

I would be as well. There are different car rental companies that do monthly rentals?

I've used my friends car when she's of island a few times. No insurance issues.

Only if there's an accident. I'm not sure I would want our insurance on the hook for someone else's wreck...not to mention the potential loss of our vehicle, and if there are any injuries we could be sued as well. Pass.

According to her agent even in the event of an accident she would still be covered. I can't speak for other insurance companies.

It depends. If you lend your car to someone to drive, yes they are covered, but your rates can still go up as a result of the accident, meaning you pay more for your insurance. And if your insurance company finds out you were "renting" the vehicle, which is not covered under most standard auto owner policies, your claim could be denied, in which case you are on the hook for the entire cost of the accident, repairs, and/or injuries. You are supposed to be the primary driver of your vehicle, or your spouse or family members, not a stranger you decided to "rent" (or even loan for a few months) to.

And again beyond insurance there is the issue of personal liability - auto insurance doesn't always cover all in the event of a lawsuit if a person is injured. If you don't have adequate insurance coverage, it's out of your pocket. For me the personal liability and financial risk of renting to an unknown person would be too great.

If anyone seriously considers this, then an in-depth discussion with your insurance agent is necessary to understand the implications in the event of a loss and/or injury or death for someone "renting" your car from you.

I don't know that I would volunteer any information to my insurance company. They have enough excuses to screw us as it is. It sucks to say it doesn't pay to be honest anymore.
Example: Years ago I was delivering pizza using my own car. Got into a fender bender and told the agent not knowing any better. I found out the hard way if you're using your car for such a purpose you're not covered!

Exactly. And whether you tell them or not, they generally find out when there's an accident if you've been lying to them. Hence my whole point about not "renting" a vehicle to a third party when you don't have the coverage, or you'd be in violation of your policy...

Many car rental agencies will lease out their cars.
I know that Budget does as well as Dependable Car, here in STT.
Budget in STX may do the same.
