$300,000 worth of new equiptment stolen over the Thanksgiving break.
Wow. Can you say inside job.
The new Technical equptment had just arrived for a new program.

Maybe they just got lucky in picking the right night to hit the place. (and knowing where it was)

No big deal. Education Dept. has lots of money to blow. right?

I saw this in the paper today. Unbeleivable. 300000 is ALOT of equipment. I am guessing it was computer equipment as I cant imagine what else would cost so much and be valuable to thieves. I am sure they werent stealing textbooks or chairs.

Where do you even fence that much stuff?

Easy solution to finding the criminals. Run a one page ad in the paper every day listing in detail what was stolen. Offer a 3000 dollar reward(1 percent of the value of stuff stolen) for info leading to the arrest and recovery of stolen items.

You cant hide that much stuff from everyone especially if you are trying to get rid of it. For 3000 someone will squeal real quick.

Someone thought ahead. Great way to avoid the holiday shopping rush. Sure beats holding up KMART on december 24.

Seriously, this sucks.

From the news article:
The equipment was recently received for a pilot program that was expected to launch this week, Molloy said in a statement from Education. “We are heartbroken that this has occurred, particularly since the department and our school administrators worked so hard to procure the equipment and to get things up and running,” he said.
Must be extremely disappointing. Managing high school programs can be pretty thankless career. Having to deal with type of an inside job, must suck.

Unfortunately equipment theft from schools isn't an uncommon occurrence here and has been reported many times over the years - and isn't always an "inside job". Obviously numerous people know when such shipments are scheduled and obviously there needs to be better security in place but the opportunists will always find a way. Hopefully it'll be recovered. As far as "where do you fence that stuff", a big ring of burglars hitting private homes was recently at least partially broken up. The investigation is still ongoing but It was a very slick operation with a large number of people involved. The stolen goods were shipped off island to be sold elsewhere.

On the radio news item they mentioned the cost of computers at $12,000 EACH! WTF!
I'd like to be the supplier for that contract. This was an inside job on both ends.

If you read the newspaper articles on the inventory stolen it's made clear that this wasn't a shipment of run of the mill equipment but highly specialized electronic equipment. Mention was made of one of the computers being in the $12K range. It's also noted in the article that the area in which the equipment was located was covered by surveillance cameras (which are currently being reviewed) and the burglars had to saw their way through iron bars to gain access. Let's not leap in to jump to conclusions based on scanty or no evidence. 😀

According to todays paper the 300k number was a mistake. I guess it was more like 20k worth of equipment. Some tv stuff and some ipads I guess.

I hope they are able to solve this one.

Was that in the Avis? The Snooze doesn't print on Sunday so assume it was.

Was in the Daily News yesterday. It begs the question as to who is teaching math, also if you just purchased 20 thousand dollars worth of equipment wouldn't it have been easy to look at the invoice to say what was stolen rather than making such an erroneous statement? Geesh.

The News article was pretty explanatory about the stupid clerical error - it does seem as though the burglars didn't mess with the surveillance cameras so hopefully something will be found on them to help the investigation and retrieval of the stolen equipment.
