Advice on Selling a Car

Hello everyone,

I am planning on selling a car next month and would welcome advice from anyone who has bought or sold recently. I have a general idea of the prep involved – signing off title, execute bill of sale, have registration in hand, making sure buyer has own insurance, etc. and get all documents notarized with buyer in attendance. What I question most is if I need to go with buyer to DMV to officially record the transfer of title or if buyer takes that on after sale. I’m not having much luck getting someone live at DMV but will keep trying.. Any advice on overall personal experiences would be most welcome – thanks in advance!

Both should go to BMV, with Notarized documents in hand...try to go in the middle of the month for less wait times....

You don't need to go to the DMV with the buyer. As long as all the documents are signed and notarized then you are OK. On STX I suggest using the notary services of Jeanne B. Goodrich (340.718.2617) who was very helpful when I sold my Suzi. Her office is located in the same building as Paint Locker (near FoodTown). And make sure you keep a copy of the documents as some insurance companies will need proof that the vehicle is sold before they will cancel the policy.

You either have to go w/ the buyer to the BMV or you must give the buyer a copy of your driver's license to take w/ him or her. They will not do the paperwork otherwise.
