Job...check, Apt...check - Need help with car, please!

Secured job in STT June 7th (from off-island, BTW) and with the help of some great folks from this board, just sealed the deal on a 2 bedroom apt. in Frenchman's Bay! The 3 boxes I shipped from NYC have arrived safely and I'm looking forward to being re-united with them when I fly down on 9/30!

The last major piece of the puzzle is finding a car - prefer a Jeep, Sidekick, etc. Don't care what it looks like cosmetically as long as it's sound mechanically. If anyone has any leads, I'd again be most grateful. PM or e-mail me please.

Thanks in advance and am sooooooooo looking forward to my arrival and to, hopefully, meeting some of you face-to-face!

How much do ya wanna spend? There're always plenty of vehicles for sale here, and we can help you find one, but we need to know where your budget is.

That apartment is gonna be AWESOME, huh? Yay!

Hey, Marty and everyone -

The short answer is "as little as possible" for something that's clean and is reliable. Looking to go no higher than $5K for an Jeep-y kind of vehicle...doable?

Yes, we are PSYCHED about the apartment - and from what I hear, plenty of outdoor space for get togethers, wooo hooooo!!

Have a reliable mechanic check out whatever you think you might want to buy. I found my gem of a STT mechanic after years of searching and BS and, to my mind, he is the best.

Not only does he come out to YOUR place or where the car is, but he not only arrives absolutely on time but painstakingly identifies problems. For a check on a vehicle he charges a straight $50 and its well worth it.

PM for info. Cheers!

Hey, Robert -
Shipped all of my boxes parcel post via USPS and they took approxiately 4-5 weeks to arrive from NYC. Each one was maxed out on weight (70 lbs). and total dimensions (130" I think, but check with your local PO on that stat). While you can ship slightly larger sized boxes, you then get into additional fees. One box was 1" over the "allowed" size and they wanted to charge me an additional $65.00 to ship it...so, I re-packed! With $500.00 insurance on each box, the price averaged $45.00/box for shipping.
Good luck!

Well, personally, I AM partial to that guy, so I think he's the best! He sure works cheap, too! Too bad, he's married, huh? Haha!

Robert.......
I shipped 6 boxes from Washington state using the USPS. My boxes were all insured for $500 and were the maximum weight and size allowed. The arrival of the boxes varied anywhere from 1and 1/2 weeks to 4 weeks which was quick compared to how long they said it would take. All boxes arrived without a scratch on them. As Ann has told you, they are sticklers about size and weight so be sure to leave them open until the p.o. weighs them and then add or subtract until you hit the 70 lb mark and then tape them up. (be sure to leave a few ounces for the weight of the tape!) By the way, each box cost between $48 and $52 each! Good luck!!

Marty........
It's good to know our mechanic is cheap as we never discussed prices. I really like the guy too! Too bad he's married.............. LOL!

Hi STT Resident. My family and I are going to be living in STT for 14 weeks. We arrive on 9/30. Can you please give me the name and phone number of the mechanic you mentioned. We will need a vehicle, but can't spend too much money.
Thank you,
Cigarrito

Dear Cigarrito,

Prefer not to put phone numbers on an open forum but if you could register on the forum I'd be happy to send you a PM - or you can PM me with your email address and I'll pass the info on to you. Cheers.

I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler for sale. It's Red with a tan soft top and it has only about 32K miles on it. I've had it for a year and I've had no trouble with it. I did put new front brakes on it though because of the steep switchbacks on STJ. I'm selling it for $5500. I'll be leaving island on 10/1, so if you're interested in it, let me know. Best of luck to you!
