Hey everyone! I've done my research and I know the chances are slim, but I'm going to post this anyway. We NEED a long term rental (apartment, condo, villa or house) on St. John. PLEASE let me know if you have/know anything... even just a contact. Thank you.

birdz17: as good as your intentions may well be, it's VERY hard to find a long-term rental in any of the USVIs unless you're physically here so that the landlord can actually see you, check out your references and all else.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule but that's the bottom line.

Best that you make a PMV and check everything in person. There are usually always apartments available on STJ (surprise surprise!) but landlords on all islands have historically been burned bigtime and so often that they'd often rather keep a place vacant than even think of renting it out.

Your best bet is to go through the innumerable posts on this forum about STJ, check out "Connections" on STJ for available rentals on their board but, more importantly, do that PMV. Cheers!

I know I'm supposed to do a PMV - but for a number of reasons it's just not possible (if need be I can go into details later.) We are becoming quite concerned that even if we go down and stay anywhere for a month while we look we still won't be able to find what we need/want. I've been to the "Connections" site a few times and didn't see anything for long term rental. Do some people, after meeting you in person, change there minds about the short term rental and make an exception for a long term rental? Any help would be GREAT! Thanks.

Most landlords do not post long term rentals on websites. And the papers usually don't put them on their website because you have to be here :). As for a short term changing to a long term on stj, I doubt it. They make alot more money that way and tourism is good on stj.

So... has ANYBODY ever had luck doing a long term stay on St. John? We may buy a place on St. John next year, but want to try it for a year first. We have traveled there every year for 9 years, so we know what we are getting into. We have already hired a private teacher to teach our son while we are down there. We are adamant that it is St. John we live on and not Stt or Stx. We live in the states and have plenty of money to make this happen if someone is willing. Would anyone consider doing it if we did paperwork in advance by fax and we sent down the first and last months deposits, etc etc?

Yes of coarse you can get a long term rental. Just saying you need to be there. Theres always a chance you might find something on the internet it is just very slim.

Hi there

I sent you a PM but when I check to see if you got it (I was going to send you another one) it does not show as being sent. Let me know if it went through and I'll send you another later today.

Have you contacted the local realtors/property managers etc. That is how we got our accomodation - just show 'em your bank account - just joking. If you put down a wad of cash, they will rent to you off island.

I'd recommend coming on down and staying at a place like Inn at Tamarind Court while you look for a place to stay. Look for long-term rentals at Connections or Starfish, which also has a bulletin board. You can also check the classifieds at www.stjohnnews.com. Also, talk to people and put the word out that you are looking for a place to stay once you're here and I am sure you'll get a response. Good luck.

Hello birdz17,

When folks are recommending Connections they are referring to the bulletin boards that are in the actual physical office. You might give them a call, if they aren't busy perhaps they will look on the bulletin board and see if there is anything posted about apartments. Your best bet might be to follow up on Jane's suggestion of contacting some local Realtors on St. John to see if they have any leads for you on long term rentals.
