ok, I'm booked and ready to move, but will arrive New Year's Eve. Start the new year at my new home (well temp housing). Anyone happen to be leaving and wanting to rent out their place for a good price, get rid of a car instead of paying all the costs to get it back, any suggestions on job searching when I arrive...hoping that being the busy season, I shouldn't have any problems ....

You don't specify which island, but if STX, New Years is not the best time to arrive. We're in the middle of carnival and businesses will be very busy and government offices will be closed. So, for example, getting a health card will be problematic. And getting interview also will be challenging.

Why did you choose this date?

Well, it was the only date that was going to work with getting everything wrapped up here first. We have a place to stay and I plan on getting a rental car for about a week. We plan on taking the first week off just to check out the island (St Thomas) and meet some people since there will be celebrations. Once that settles down, we plan on getting all the required stuff taken care of including license, health card, purchase a car, look for a job. I'm thinking that will be ok, a week or maybe two and things will have settled down enough for us to get on the ball, your thoughts?

The holidays start here right after Thanksgiving and continue well into mid February! Offices will be hit n miss, especially during the time you are arriving. Carnival will be gearing up here in St Croix and all 3 islands will be scheduling office closures in order to be part of the celebrations. Its a magical time to be here, but be prepared to NOT get much done!!!
Good Luck

Reserve your rental car well in advance. This is the busiest week of the year and rental cars will be scarce.

Where would you say the best place to rent a car would be at the airport? I've had problems with Avis in the states -- getting there and no cars available. Any suggestions? I'd like to make the reservation now. Thanks for all your help. Makes me a little nervous since you said it's a hard time, but we decided we wanted to start our new life in the new year, so I sure hope it works for us. Think we'll be able to have some success in job hunting about 2 weeks into January? At least somewhere to bring in a little bit of income?

We have Budget and Hertz at the airport as well as Avis (i think they're still working out there...)

Budget: http://www.budgetstcroix.com/ or 888-264-8894
Hertz: www.RentACarStCroix.com or 340-778-1402

there's also Judi of Croix who may come get you from the airport, not sure.

Centerline Car Rentals has free pickup:

Hope this helps!

I think no matter when you arrivie, you will have as much success finding employment as you pit energy into looking for one. And, it is all about expectation. The best thing is to be who you are and try not to be afraid to talk to strangers. Keep your guard up and be careful who you share too much personal information with.

You have done your homework. You will be fine.
