Hello. I really would prefer not to own a car. And I don't need anything as fast as a motorcycle. So I am interested in getting a scooter. This would be my only mode of transportation, however.

Is this a reasonable idea on the island? I've heard safety may be a problem, but I am more concerned with rain. When the rainy season arrives, is it day after day of downpours, or is it more off and on? I'm just wondering if it's worth sucking it up and throwing on a raincoat or if it just gets too wet to try to get around on a bike.

Some people do use a bike/scooter exclusively, but it would not be my choice. I want more power and more protection.

We seldom gets full days of rain or multiple days of rain. We have had a couple of years when it rained 28 days in November, or something like that, but it's not usual. That was actually on St. Thomas. St. Croix doesn't seem to get as much rain. That's not scientific data, just the way it seems to me.

Stx doesnt usually rain for more then 2 or 3 days except in the rainy season, but its not just the rain. Tmleeke take your question to the relocation board, its not fair of us to tell you why not to get one while this guys trying to sell it.

Betty, I was actually hoping to get a response from kjcnote since he obviously owns a scooter. I am thinking about buying his scooter, that's why I wrote the message here. The reason I asked the question is because I am considering this to be my only transportation. If so, I would like to know from a scooter owner what he thinks. If someone else is thinking about buying this scooter, it is more than likely for enjoyment purposes, and these answers wouldn't really apply to them or discourage their purchase.

Thanks for the answers everyone.

The scooter has been my only form of transportation for the past 9 months. I would not suggest riding it in the rain because the streets get way too slippery. I would just pull over and wait out the rain showers and then keep driving. The roads aren't bad for a scooter but when they are wet they are not good.
It is a big scooter so its a great form of transportation rather than a toy. They are becoming very popular all over St croix and there are dealers in Puerto Rico that will get you parts or other accessories should you want them.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

By the way- I am a woman and I ride a motorcycle and the scooter. Funny how everyone assumed I was a guy!

I thought about that after I wrote the message. I considered going back and writing "he/she", sorry. I know it's not a big deal, but it goes to show, never assume.

Yea, I do have one other question. How much upkeep does the scooter require? And if it needs some work that I can't handle, are mechanics on island able to work on scooters?

Thanks for getting back with me.

I haven't had many issues with it. The battery will run low every once in a while because scooters aren't equippped with alternators to keep them charged. So once a month I put a charger on it and charge it up. You can tell when its getting low because the electrical starter buttom will have a slight delay. When it is charged it starts right up perfectly.
The only other things I have ever had an issue with is the tires. If you get a nail in one of them then it is a little difficult to get air in it. I've gotten 2 nails in the rear tire so I had to plug it and then pump it up. One time I didn't have a pump so I was stuck on the side of the road. If you drive it with a flat tire the tire will pop off of the rim and it is tubeless so it is very hard to get it to hold air. I know have a pocket sized hand pump that I keep in the seat compartment so no issues there. The scooter is not a luxury form of transportation so you just have to be nice to it and it will serve you well.
Also, the gas gauge doesn't work all the time. Some times it does and sometimes it doesn't. You can get a new one for $20 if its a big concern to you. I just open the gas cap and look it and know how far I can go. It only takes like 2 gallons so its easy to keep full.
It will eventually need a new rear brake cable which is $15. Lifan has dealers all over FL which can get you these parts easily. The front brake is perfect but you don't want to pull it hard to stop because its a disc brake and will lock up on you. The rear brake is a drum brake and the pads are good. I just want to give you the most information that i can. I am a novice when it comes to mechanics and I have made all of the necessary repairs for the past 9 months. It is easy and there is a motorcycle shop on island that can do repairs.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
