What would you do with 1920 hours of time available from two volunteers?

My spouse and I are interested in volunteering at a business (for profit or non-profit) or government agency in one of the US Virgin Islands - St Croix, St John or St Thomas.

For 6 months, you can expect us to commit 40 hours per person per week to your assignment. That is a total of 1920 hours - One year's time for one Full time employee!

Your business or government agency will be responsible providing us with housing including all utilities, and a one bedroom condo is suffice.

We have 20 combined years of working experience primarily playing various roles in Procurement Consulting and Technology Consulting. Our professional work experience include jobs at a Big 4 Accounting firm and a Management Consulting engaged in various client projects at Fortune 500 companies such as Sears, Wachovia, Nextel, Cisco, Oracle , IBM, Ogilvy & Mather, FleetBoston, Bank Of New York, Johnson & Johnson, Marsh, Charles Schwab, The World Bank, ADP, JP Morgan Chase, Verizon, American Express, the World Bank, among others.

We have experience volunteering as Board Member of a local music Non-profit organization, as a Coach of the annual Aids Marathon, as a Project Manager at the American Red Cross, and as a Technology Advisor at a internationally-focused non-profit organization.

Please submit a summary of your assignment for review to caribbeanvolunteer@gmail.com

Do not hold your breath waiting for the VI Government to call or email you. It is never going to happen.

Why would you not want to be paid? What your asking for in return could easily be extremely expensive and it would make me nervous that you are a scam artist. If someone puts you up in a condo and puts all the bills in their name, it is a very lengthy process to get you out and meanwhile you would be living rent free. If all of your experience is legitimate you will easily be able to get a job on your own terms.

Question??? Why would anyone put you up or even want to?

You send a resume and tell the employer what YOU want!!

I continue to be amazed even as I turn 63 y.o. in a couple of months.

Next please.

I really do not think you are going to get any bites. It is very hard to get hired on island if you are not on it. Let alone have someone find you a employment, a condo and pay all your bills.

Betty - You are amusing too because of your creative interpretation of our initial posting.

Let it be clear: We have no interest in having someone find us employment, find us a condo, or pay all our bills.

We want to volunteer our professional management consulting skills for 6 months at a public or private sector business. The financial cost to the business for covering our rent plus utilities will likely be less the the minimum hourly wage per person.

Volunteer- So I guess you would be paying groceries then 😉 Still no one is going to do this for you. Most of the business in the VI is small mom and pop business or a franchise like Marriott that is privately owned. Not a lot of demand for consultants. Not trying to insult you. If you want to come down here just come down, I'm sure you're experience will easily translate into a job here. You seem a little more then hostile to people telling you how things work on the islands. Remember these are little islands with a completely different culture and way of doing things. The islands are used to people saying they are going to come and then not coming. For example we badly need nurses here and while they will help them find housing here they will not secure it for them. Its very hard for people to take you seriously until you are here.

Betty - We want to find an opportunity to volunteer our professional skills for 6 months. Your opinions will not prevent us from pursuing this.

I never was trying to prevent you from coming just trying to tell you you are going about it in an almost impossible manner. You think I'm trying to put you down or squash your dreams and I'm not. I was trying to help you but giving you a heads up on what works here. But if you want to beat your head against the wall feel free, I'm not interested in helping someone who thinks they know it all or whatever works stateside will work here. You have to be here. The possibility of someone getting cheap labor is not worth the effort you are talking about to set you up in a condo and pay all your utilities and have no guarantee that you will work. And I always thought a volunteer worked for free, sounds more like you are asking for some kind of paid internship, which I noticed set up red flags with some other posters..

Dear Volunteer,

You probably have no idea of the multitude of nuts and newbies who come here and how leery so many of us are who have not only encountered them but have in some cases initially believed their stories only to be disappointed bigtime.

Nobody with half a brain here will even seriously think about what you're ostensibly offering until they see you face to face and then, given your demands for housing, etc. not do a thorough background check on you. Are you up for that?

I have a tiny small business here on STT which generally requires only one PT employee but as the years go on
I've learned my lessons well and the Internet is invaluable where nationwide reference checks are concerned. Oh and telephone check-ups of stateside references of course.

Betty's opinons may well not deter you from your goals but I doubt you'll have any bites via this forum. Cheers!

Betty, beachbum, STT Resident

A Director one of the Government Agencies responded within 24 hours and is interested in our proposal.

A regular messageboard member of VINOW is also interested in our proposal.

It is good to have a couple options for our 6-month volunteer assignment after searching for a few days. We expect to seek out many more options even before we see anyone face to face or set foot in any USVI.

We will also continue to ignore your negative advice.
