Is it considered an international call, if you call from a cell phone from the mainland?
I recently switched my # to a STT area code for my move in october. I know it is free for me as I'm on Sprint, but just curious if loved ones can still call the islands from their cell phones in the US ?

I'm not familiar with Sprint's plans but the answer to your question is going to depend on your calling plan.

Since the VI's are a US Territory, it is considered a domestic call. On a land line phone it would be a long distance toll call if your plan did not include some sort of nation wide long distance. I have AT&T (land line) in the states and have their Unlimited Nationwide calling. It includes all of the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US VI's. However, my AT&T cell plan has the international package (I think an extra $5 a month) so VI calls are included,

I just changed to Cingular/ATT and 340 is part of their domestic nationwide plan.

My parents have Vonage and it's 6 cents a minute to call the VI.

We have both AT&T and Verizon for cell phones in NJ. We're covered for both on-island and off-island to/from Continental US / USVI within the AT&T plan. In other words the USVI is completely covered both ways The Verizon plan only covers calls made from the continental US to the USVI. From the USVI to anywhere we're roaming.

Land line (in NJ)......we have Verizon with unlimited calling....this covers calling the USVI.

Sprint and Cingular are free to the VI. T-Mobile I believe charges 69 cents a minute and some Verizon plans charge 20 cents a minute.

I switched my Sprint to a local number too and now everyone that calls from home shows up as Unknown. Is this happening to you or are you showing numbers from the mainland the way they should be?

All of my calls from stateside come up as unknown too. It's very annoying. I have Cingular (now AT&T)
If anyone knows how to change it so that the number/name come up, I would really appreciate the information.

Thanks for the info. I added a phone line and had it set to a 340 number. Mostly for my mom to be able to call without using long distance minutes from the land line. Most everyone nowadays has a cell phone with a long distance plan anyway.
I'll be on the islands at the end of September for my PMV and some interviews. The local # actually helps out a lot, although I've been getting a few wring #s looking to ask for a local. haha

Get used to that! I get all kinds of calls & mostly they act mad that I'm not who they were trying to reach.
