Could anyone give me some insight as to the best and econimical way to fly my dog over. He weighs 22 pounds. I will be moving 7/30 to STX from Washington, DC. I'll send for him very shortly after that.

melody:
i don't think any airlines from dc fly direct. i have traveled frequently with my jack russell ( who had to go under the plane because she was to big for the bag). american has climate control.
its hard if you are not there with your dog, especially if there is a lay over.(climate ect).
check with american, but see if you can bring the dog with you, it will probably be easier.

normally the most economical way to travel with a dog is as checked baggage (ie. under the plane accompanying a passenger). many airlines have restrictions during the summer months due to temperature (also, in winter mos. they may not fly pets when the temps. drop under a certain degree). i'm not sure if you can fly a pet on a commercial airline unaccompanied (with out a person flying along).

you can also send a dog via cargo, however, this is normally considerably more expensive.

might you be leaving your dog with someone who would like to accompany him down?

That is a good idea. I think I try to find my dog an escort.
