A Couple of Questions

Hello,
My boyfriend and I are planning on moving to St Croix so that I can go to the nursing school at UVI. I have read almost everything about moving to the islands on the website twice. I also go the “Settler’s Handbook”. Here’s my question, we have to large dogs (a chocolate lab mix and a German Shepard mix) I’ve seen others inquire about finding places to rent that take large dogs but does anyone know people that have actually done it? I have started making preparation to move at the end of July/beginning of August, before the semester starts, but I’m getting nervous that we won’t be able to find a reasonably priced (less than $750) apartment to rent. Any and all feedback regarding this issue would be great 🙂

My other question has to do with chartering a plane. We are looking into seeing how much it would be to charter a plane from the Miami/ Ft Lauderdale area to St Croix, does anyone know of pilots/company’s that provide charter service?

As it gets closer to the move I’m sure I’ll have more questions, I’ve been on the board a few weeks reading post and I already feel like I’ve read a lot of valuable things.

Thanks
Lauren in Portland, Oregon

Regarding Aircraft Charter services that operate out of Ft. Lauderdale, you should be aware that chartering a plane is not inexpensive. I say this because you commented on looking for reasonably priced accomodations and chartering an aircraft is not for the budget minded. Depending on the size of the aircraft that will fit your need, figure any where from about $500 per hour for a small 2 engine prop plane (assuming it has the range to make the flight) to upwards of $5,000 per hour for a modest size private jet such as a Lear 31 or a Citation. Keep in mind you have to also factor in the time and cost of the "deadhead" leg of the flight so the aircraft and crew can return to their home base. If chartering a plane still appeals to you post a comment and I can give you the names and numbers of several charter companies you can contact for specific pricing.

We are still interested in chartering a small plane; using whatever the smallest plan is that can make the trip.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Lauren,

Just wondering - are you chartering a plane so you can bring the dogs?? Pets can travel by plane as cargo if they are large. Little ones as carry ons. I am sure you have looked into this already and have your reasons, but figured I would mention it just in case.

Onika, who uses the board, moved with a few cats and a dog. She moved to St. Thomas. If you read story #2 it talks about getting the pets here and other things.

Is it an option for one of you to move first and find an apartment that allows dogs and then the other person can travel with the dogs a few days/weeks later??

Airlines prohibit/restrict animals that have to travel in the cargo area during the hotter months, you need to check that issue.
