Accounting Jobs in the USVI

Hello. I was just wondering whether or not accounting is a decent profession down in the islands? I'm one semester away from completing a dual masters program in Accounting and MBA. Are accounting positions available down there? I understand that I would need to interview in person during a PMV, but just thought I'd ask what the general thoughts are on this field. Thanks.

hi there Accounting Guy

Yes, accounting jobs seem to be pretty plentiful here—actually they seem to be one of the most frequent professional listings that I see in the local paper. I think the low end salaries are around $20-$25K a year and can go up to $45K or higher, depending on the company and what your qualifications are. Yes, you would have to interview in person and also some of the private companies have residency requirements—you would need to be living here for at least a year to be considered for the job.

Here's a recent posting from St Croix Source ( http://stx.onepaper.com/)
Management firm has 2 openings: Management firm has 2 openings: Staff Accountant. Three to five years related experience and degree in accounting required. Public accounting experience preferred. Tax preparation and compliance a plus. Requirements: excellent communication skills, computer and QuickBooks proficiency, detail oriented and team player. Executive professional secretary/receptionist needed for high energy, demanding executive. Must have high level of organization with good computer skills. Must have experience, be professional and have the ability to multi task. Fax resume to 719-8767 Attn: A. Rock or e-mail to [email protected]

hi Franisarius
The answer is yes. Quickbooks is a standard. (I asked a co-worker who is a staff accountant)

Thank you very much. Quickbooks is nice and not terribly difficult to use.

Hello there. I have recently been asking the same question, but more pertaining to freelancers. When I move from being a single psychotherapist to being a primary in an LLC, as there may be some funding streams involved, it is something that to do myself would just be too time consuming.

I found that the freelancers generally that are recommended offer both book keeping and accounting services, so for those of us that are, well, challenged in this area, it is very consumer friendly.

I don't know or just missed where you are moving to, but it would seem at least on STX that small business is on the rise, much do to the SBDC, the SBA and the territorial incentives. That said, if you are waiting for an FT job to turn up, it would seem that with fairly little advertisement, you would be able to get a number of clients over the course of a few months.

Remember that word of mouth is powerful on the islands, and if you are good and make it easy on small business owners, you could do quite well.

I would also imagine, that regardless of where you are living, if you can do remote accounting/book keeping (i.e. have a set time to access online a business' computer) you could get three islands worth of work.

Just a couple of ideas from the other end of the spectrum,

best wishes,
