What major banks are located on STT? I would like to transfer my money from the mainland to a branch here, to avoid carrying so much cash of course. Thanks for the help!- Mark

Hello Mark,

Banks on St. Thomas include Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, Bank of Nova Scotia and First Bank.

You may want to come here with soem cash to open an account, then wire the money, or bring travellers checks. Don't let them put hold on the travellers checks (yes they will) or it will take up to 14 days to clear. When I came the teller didn't know how to deposit them without a hold, so I cashed the checks first (which they were happy to do), and then immediately deposited the cash. Ta dah! Worked for me. I've even had to do that with checks drawn on the same bank to avoid a hold. Also, the banking laws are different than in the states, so make sure you know what happens to the accounts if something happens to you.
