so, it seems you are not even safe in your house and bedroom. a young lady was shot dead while sleeping in her house in her bed. this was not an accident whoever shot her meant to kill her

Sad that this is the state of affairs these days:

the mother told officers she heard a gunshot sometime after midnight, but had not given it much thought.

My thoughts exactly. How many places is it considered normal to hear a gunshot close by in the middle of the night?

On STX it is quite common (i.e., normal) to hear gunshots close by in the middle of the night. Condo row and the North Shore are personal experience examples. One guy got shot on my doorstep. I've lived all over the world and never had to deal with so much gunfire as on STX.

Sad sad sad. Love that island, but man is it circling the toilet bowl fast.

They really should enforce strict gun laws so the criminals wont have guns anymore, seriously where is the government on this?

Not sure if you all saw the Crime Stoppers ad this week in the Daily News (don't know if its in the Avis)...There is an "open request" to the residents of St. Croix regarding gunshots. They are asking people, I guess, to call Crime Stoppers or "any law enforcement agency" if you hear gunshots.

Go to www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org and click on Submit a Tip, or call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Or text "USVI" plus your message to CRIMES (274637).

Are they going to start responding to calls about them?

It should.

Sorry. Much love for STX, but it's a really dangerous place to live unless you're very wealthy and can afford the nice neighborhoods complete with gates and guards and dogs, etc.

Some people on this page get easily upset if we post the truth about crime here, so I won't post any crime related information.

But I'm sure that others will.

What do you mean by nice neighborhoods? I do have and will bring my 130 lb Rottweiler but as far as guards and wealth , I have neither. STX is soooooooooooo beautiful, what the heck is wrong with these people? Do you think they forgot to take their pill or did they take too many?

You appear to have the early signs of eye-opening to STX before your arrival, which is good. For many it takes months or years after they have sold their belongings and sunk money and time into relocating to realize that the islands are not what they hoped. Being sold on the beauty and mythical "island lifestyle" is a path that generally leads to disillusionment, anger, and regret.

Like Iris I also love STX and my wife and I have been here many years. We are now more watchful and considering a move as we enter our golden years. What is happening on the island now is sad and beyond what we ever imagined. I do hope that the good people of STX figure out how to remove the bad. The years change, but nothing else seems to.

puerto rico is alot worse. this is a nice island. there are good people and bad, just like everywhere else. the island being soo small, the distance between the good and bad is just that much smaller.

For sure I know there is the good bad and the ugly everywhere so I can't wait to get there and check it out for myself. I also wanted to mention we will be moving our 14 year old son. He is pretty savvy so hope there is enough the keep him busy and yet get a good education

Lots of drugs on both islands and drinking age in the USVI is 18. Teens of all ages get served 18 and under.

Most will agree that good education requires private school on STX.
