Hello! My husband and I are interested in starting a dog rescue program here on St. Thomas. A few months ago, our neighbor left the island and left his dog behind. We took him and and had hoped to keep him, but our cat would not allow it. For four months we tried to find an island home for him and failed. My husband was going back to the states to visit his family and posted an ad online...we got over 40 responses from people that wanted to adopt an island dog. We went through the 40 responses and found the best home available...he is not living on a 5 acre farm in the middle of a state park where there are hiking trails all around him and a family that works from home and can be with him all day long. This inspired us to see if we could find other kind-hearted volunteers on St. Thomas to "chaperone" dogs to new homes in the States. If you would like to volunteer all you would have to do is tell us when and where you will be visiting stateside. We will then go to work adopting a dog from the Humane Society and finding a home for the dog in the location you are travelling to. We will meet you at the airport with the dog and upon landing, all you will have to do is pick up the dog from the airline office and introduce him/her to the new family that will come to the airport to pick them up.

We plan to charge $150 to the new families - that's $50 adoption fee for the Humane Societ and $100 airline fee to fly the dog (standard charge for airlines if the dog has to be put down below...not yet sure of the charge for carrying on). This is NOT for profit, only for the sake of the animals that would otherwise be put down.

Please send us an email if you are interested in being on the volunteer list. It will be of no cost to volunteer or participate, we only ask for kindness and compassion to make sure the dogs arrive safely in their new homes.

The St. Croix Animal Welfare already has such a program, called "Pets from Paradise", it sends a fairly significant number of animals back to the states to a number of locations.

Like anything else, it is rarely as simple as it sounds, however. I would suggest you call the program person on St. Croix at the Animal Welfare Society and she can let you know of the challenges and rewards you face in implmenting a program of this sort. The number is 778-1650, ask for "Pets from Paradise".

Is this going to be a 501c3 corp? If I'm flying home to Arkansas and can help you in the future, I'd be glad to - you can PM me if you'd like.

Transplant, thank you for the information - I wasn't aware of that program...what a GREAT thing! I did Rottweiler rescue in the states and now have my 5 Rotties here with me, along with the mutt....if I can help an island dog find a home, I'd love to be of assistance.
