Starting to live life by all the great mottos..."Get busy living or get busy dying!", "Take the road less traveled", "Live life to its fullest!" etc...! Finally I'm doing something about it! I'm packing up and heading out to St. Johns in early October. Can't wait!

If anybody has any great info on what to initially bring, places to live, roommates needed, and job opportunities; that would be great! Or if you could steer me to other great info spots I would appreciate it!

Thanks again 🙂

Hello Lance,

Bring summer cloths, if you will be working somewhere that requires slacks/dress shirt then bring that too, sneakers, flip flops, personal items and anything you can't do without. Pack a few boxes of might need and label them 1,2,3... leave them with friends or family and if you find you need the contents you can call them and ask them to mail box 5 for example. If you have furniture - then thats something else to consider - whether you want to ship it or just sell it in a yard sale or store it. You might mention what you were thinking of bringing perhaps we can give better feedback.

You can keep an eye out here for room-mate/apartment situations. Often folks stay in short term rentals/inns for a few days/weeks while finding something. On St. John there are campgrounds to. What was your plan in terms of finding an apartment?

What type of work?

Hi Islander 🙂

Hey, I appreciate the the response back! Thanks for the info about 1,2,and 3 boxes that will definately come in useful. I was pretty much thinking the same things on clothing : shorts, sandals, t-shirts, dress shirts and pants etc. I'll fit as much clothing as I can take with me, no need for furniture, i'll probally have to scrounge some up on the island!

What to do about apartments or roommates? Don't really know just yet. I've been looking at a million sites online haven't found really anything yet, I think I might have better luck calling a real estate agent down there to direct me where to look? or just go down and see whats available? What do you think?

As far as work, I'm interested in bartending down there, maybe work with water associated tourist activities, restaurants, you name it I guess! I like dealing and interacting with people for sure! So hopefully I would be able to find something? As they say something always pops up somewhere! And if you had any info on where great places to work might be, that would be great!

Once again thanks for the fast response, hope to hear back from you Islander!

Hello Lance,

You can definitely try a realtor; you may find that their selections are on the medium to higher end of the rent scale price wise; so just keep that in mind. You can check with Connections, that’s the mail/fax/internet type center on St. John- they have a bulletin board people put classifieds on. Maybe you could put a rental wanted ad up or see if they have any rental available ads. http://www.connectionsstjohn.com/. The thing many do is to come down and stay in an inn/small hotel and look once on island for something - looking in the paper, on bulletin boards, asking around.

You should be able to find something in bartending/restaurants/water sports since you are coming just before season starts.

All the best,
