Hey guys,
Ill be moving down sometime in July. Im an avid scuba diver, and am looking for a nice 1-2 bedroom apartment or condo close to the water near Gallows bay. Price isn't really an issue- any recommendations of places to live with nice diving on from the beach?

Thanks!
Don

The best place I can think of near Gallows Bay are the Schooner Bay condos. They are nice 2 and 3 bdrooms. If you want a place close to the water to stay in, while you look, try the rental cottages near Cane Bay Dive Shop or the Arawak Bed and Breakfast.

I have a 2-BDR unit available at Schooner Bay condos. It's in great condition and located on the north side of the complex with views across Altoona Lagoon and out to sea. Very quiet and peaceful, making you feel like you're out in the country even though you're so conveniently located right in town for easy access to services. Long-term lease rate of $1500 per month plus metered water and power. The condo association includes cable tv, pest control, swimming pools, tennis courts, bbq area, etc. The unit has a VI Broadband receiver panel installed for easy set-up of wireless internet service. It also has newer plush furniture in the living area rather than rickety rattan or cane furnishings as is common in most rentals. I can send some pics if you provide a direct email address.

As a scuba diver myself, I wouldn't say that the beach diving from the boat ramp area of Gallows Bay would be the most ideal shore diving, but some people do enjoy diving around Protestant Cay there in the harbor. Most shore diving on STX is done from Cane Bay with a few dive sites also accessible from the west end beaches. However, once you are a local resident, the dive shops all have local rates for boat diving, especially if you sign up to go when they have lots of space available and aren't heavily booked with tourists. We also have a lion fish response program that offers free boat diving (just tip the crew) most weekends if you participate in sighting/shooting/removing lion fish from our reefs.

Thanks a lot! I was moreso interested in a 1 bedroom, 2 if the price is reasonable. Isnt the shore diving pretty much good from anywhere along the north shore?

Don - the confusion on where the diving is good is due to the semantics of describing the areas of the island. The "north shore" is considered to be primarily the western stretch of the north shore of the island pretty much running from La Vallee to Carambola Resort, centered on Cane Bay where the shore diving is best available.

The "north shore" is only a small fraction of the Northern shore of the 27 mile long island. Although much of the northern shore does have a barrier reef offshore, in most places it's further from shore than a diver would comfortably swim. At Cane Bay it's a couple hundred yards out from the shore to the top of the wall. As you go a couple miles east or west of Cane Bay, the wall arches north away from the island so you have to kick out about twice as far to do a shore dive. It's even further out from shore on the eastern half of the northern shore.

Alexandra,

How long have you been there? My family and I are coming down this summer and I have lots of questions about our move. Would love to pick your brain if you have time or interest.
Thanks in advance-

1500 for a 2 bedroom condo in gallows bay seems very reasonable...especially if cost is not an issue. *-)

Jen - Sorry for the delayed response. I've been off the website for nearly a week. Sometimes life gets busy!

I have lived here about 7-1/2 years. Feel free to contact me via email or cell phone with any questions you have.
