Reconsidering moving back to the USVI. Employment will be on STT. Do not want to live there. Looking at the reality of commuting to STJ or water island daily.

Is it feasible to take the open air taxi or pay to park a junker island car at the ferry?

STT-STJ Ferry is now $5 each way. Plenty of safari taxis if they are convenient to your work. Free parking is no longer permitted along the road.

Water Island Ferry offers different pass types. If you are full time resident it may make more sense to buy the annual unlimited or you may consider a dinghy so you can be more independent. Many Water Island residents depend on the WI ferry to go to/from work & school. Check with the Captain for the different pricing options. Most WI residents have "island" cars or golf carts - many are not registered. No charge for parking on WI side. You'll need to catch safari or have transportation on the STT side....some folks use nearby parking (e.g., Nisky Ctr) or Crown Bay Marina (fee based parking)......some folks take the Safari or gypsy cab or share rides.
