Good Afternoon everyone,

Does anyone know where to find the post that lists a bunch of companies that ship here. I know I saw it a while ago. I've searched for it but am having no luck finding it!

Thanks,

Rox

Usually most ship here. Here are the differences.

1. Electronics (including things like dvds & games) are harder to get shipped here. With electronic its more like most won't and some will. So this is where having family stateside is good or using vi cargo.

2. Shipping is almost always more then stateside. And you will rarely get free shipping even when advertised. There's usually an asterisk by the free shipping and it will be for contiguous US only. But some will so always try.

I looked it up and it seems that VI Cargo only ships to St. Croix? Is that right?

Is there a similar service for St. Thomas?

i just had AT&T ship an upgrade phone to me through DHL. worst experience! they didn't have a tracking number for days and it didn't arrive on time. It arrived to DHL but no one bothered to tell me that until i tracked it down (AT&T finally found the tracking number) on Friday afternoon. Of course they're not open on Saturdays. So then i had to go to DHL, then to excise, then to customs, pay 6% of the cost of the phone (i paid $49.99...but somehow the cost on the invoice was $86.00. Plus $1 for the MANUAL) and then back to DHL. Apparantly, if it's electronic and manufactured overseas, it has to go through all this nonsense. I thought we were a free port? Pain!

I know deliver it ships to both stx and stt. Norma H ships to all stt and stx. I pretty sure there are several companies that do this for stt. I prefer vi cargo for stx. They have it down.

When we finished renovating our condo in STT I needed to get it rental ready and ordered everything from plasma TV's, coffee makers, bedding and small furniture for a 4 plex. I opened an account with Tropical shipping and had over 200 boxes of things shipped to their Miami office where they consolidated my shipment and sent it on to STT. Griffin transport took care of the rest and delivered everything to my unit. I only had one rogue box that arrived late. I was also surprised at how nice the condition of my shipments came. I even ordered up a few dozen wine glasses hand painted with palm trees from Target and they all arrived intact! I was also refunded my taxes that I paid once I faxed all of the suppliers the Bill of Lading showing STT as the final destination for my shipment.

I found that many places would include free shipping within the continental US. Combining that with the cost of Tropical shipping and Griffin Transport I still saved a considerable amount of money if I purchased all of these things on island. The savings on the TV's alone that I purchased through Sam's Club more than covered the added shipping costs for all of the items.

One thing that I found interesting is that anything ordered from American Hotel is considered "made in America" from customs. If you have ever seen their catalog it is quite exhausting with products made around the world. My latest catalog is over 1300 pages and you can order anything from linnens to commercial kitchen equipment to a grand piano. I know that most, if not all of the larger local hotels order direct from them.

I contacted a few other services but none seem to have the process as str8fwd and convenient as these guys. Too bad.

Did you contact Deliver It? I heard it was the same exact process. I heard it from the manager on stx, but who knows.

Rox.
Your best choice of shipping into St. Croix depends on the weight and size of the shipment, in addition to what the vendor is willing to do for you. VI Cargo is a great choice for small shipments, but not better than the US Post Office. If your shipment is larger than 70Lbs, or the vendor will not use the post office, consider VI Cargo.

Blessings.

I priced out large (e.g., 200+ lbs) shipments for VI Cargo and Deliver It and Deliver It is theoretically cheaper. However I can tell you from experience you're much better off shipping small things through VI Cargo since they don't hit you with seperate customs processing fees (which is seperate from any fee you pay Customs), minimum package size fee, etc. I shipped a small item through Deliver It (about 3 lbs) and ended up paying over $50 because I didn't have all the details for their pricing policy. I suspect the same item through VI Cargo would have been around $10. I priced a large flat screen TV through both and Deliver It is a bit cheaper (haven't ordered the TV yet so I can't say for sure.)
