Archaeology jobs?

Good Evening (for me),

I'm a new prospective resident wondering if any of the islands have Contract Archeology firms for paying jobs that are semi-steady? I noticed in 'Homes' magazine of my newly arrived re-location package that a few of the properties mention archaeological assessment so I have hopes there is something. Is there a 'state archaeologist' type of position which the mainland has? Shovel bum firms? The industry tends to be networking only, no advertisements for jobs so I can't get a feel for the market without asking someone who might know someone that knows someone that knows. At this stage the island is negotiable (dreams of STJ but I'm not a gazillionaire.)

My fallback career is a computer programmer/tech support/etc and I figure I can find work with that (telecommuting if nothing else) fairly easily.

Thanks!

The only ongoing work I'm aware of is on St. John (Cinnamon Bay).

You can google "Cinnamon Bay archaeology" and find a few things to read. The Friends of the VI National Parks website is probably the best place to learn more.

I don't think there's much call or need for construction-related archaeology work down here.

There is work to be had. I suggest you contact David Brewer at the VI State Historic Preservation Office 340-776-8605. He heads the archeology team there and may best be able to answer your questions.Any digging done in the historical districts must have an archaeological study done.

There is an archeological assn or club on stx. They just had a meeting a few weeks ago. They have an office/museum in town--can't recall off hand who heads it now, but perhaps someone here would know.
