With the current economy, will it be possible to get a bartender job in St. Thomas or St. Croix if you don't move down until the middle of the coming high-season (February, for example), or will all the good jobs be taken??

A lot of people will get hired earlier than Feb., but some (many) won't last the season, for one reason or another, so there is usually a second hiring.

Is experience or certification truly necessary to get a job?

certification, not likely, but experience yes.

Experience is a must. at least on STJ. Most places on STJ make you wait tables first before they will let you behind the bar. In most cases the bartender is in charge of the cash. Owners are not inclined to allow someone "just off the boat" literally, do handle all of their money.
