G'day everyone,

In view of the recently posted "unhealthy lifestyle living" choices we make and some glaring negative consequences of these choices (and without seeming outright ridiculous) - I would be interested in reading one's opinion(s) or establishing a list of the health BENEFITS of Smoking Cigarettes and Drinking Alcohol. Both are popular in society.

where is this coming from? I don't see any thread like that. It seems like a silly post. If you do anything in moderation there is generally not a backlash. If you have a brownie now and then you are not going to get fat, but it might make you happier. There are many articles about the new wave of centenarians and most of them follow this kind of practice. I know my own grandmother who is 96 and runs her own business indulges when she feels like it but never more then what is reasonable. And she's so cute you want to put her in your pocket.

And the benefits of wine seem to be documented. What's the point of life if you don't get to do what you like? I'm not living for someone else.

Alcohol thins your blood and smoking eases stomach pain better than many OTC products.

You die early so you are less of a burden on Medicare.

"Woman from St. Croix in states needs help." A couple of posts addressed an unhealthy lifestyle (smoking etc).as being a causative agent of the problems now incurred and others recommend being responsible.

As silly as my question seems to be, I was merely curious as to the reason(s) why people engage in unhealthy lifestyles that have been clearly defined by the medical community. It was just a passing thought; perhaps for some individuals to think about. Perhaps I misconstrued the article in the above post. I feel very sad for the woman and her dilemma and wish her all the best...and a return to good health.

It's funny because it's true! Smoke up.

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1442555.stm :

"The premature deaths of smokers has economic benefits, according to a controversial report commissioned by a leading US cigarette manufacturer.

The report, drawn up for tobacco giant Philip Morris Inc, found that the Czech Republic saved about $147m in 1997 through the deaths of smokers who would not live to use healthcare or housing for the elderly.

Compiled as a cost-benefit analysis and delivered to the Czech Government, the study weighted the savings against the income tax lost and cost of caring for smokers before they died."

When we say all things in moderation, I don't think that applies to smoking. Nicotine is a powerful addictive substance and most people will tell you they are unable to stop. Studies show for some people it is as addictive as heroin, But I am all for wine and rum in moderation!!

Edited to add that both my maternal grandmother and mother died as a result of lung cancer. Both were asking for cigarettes up until the very last.

I understand your pain Linda as I also have family members that died of lung cancer but it is true there are casual smokers. People that might have 5 in a month or none at all. Many people think most of us on the island are alcoholics because the norm on the island is MUCH higher then stateside. But Europe also has a much higher drinking rate. Everyone is simply not the same.

Lily that's what I'm saying not everyone does things to excess. Some definitely do. I wasn't asking swan what the point was, but where it was coming from because there was no thread called unhealthy lifestyle living. I hadn't read the thread about the woman from the states as I'm sure you don't read every thread either. When I said it was a silly thread, I meant it was going to be one of those that prolly starts a long argument because people are rarely ambivalent about these types of things and think their way is the right way or the only way. Living here has in general thought me a lot more patience and a live and let live. I can deal with smokers better then I can deal with alcoholics/drunks but I can deal with both better then I can jerks. 🙂

**edited to add I don't want you to think I'm being snarky and calling you a jerk, I just literally mean I can deal with smoker and alcoholics better then I can deal with mean people.

5 Health Benefits of Smoking

1. Smoking lowers risk of knee-replacement surgery
2. Smoking lowers risk of Parkinson's disease
3. Smoking lowers risk of obesity
4. Smoking lowers risk of death after some heart attacks
5. Smoking helps the heart drug clopidogrel work better

I smoke. I wish I had never started. There are new electronic cigarettes that you can buy, that are essentially vaporizers with a cotton pad soaked in a mix of water and pure nicotine. These are not as satisfying as a regular cigarette, but are very close and no smoke is released from these electronic cigarettes. I paid $40 for two batteries (the front tip of the e-cig) one heating core (middle part) and five nicotine tips, along with a wall charger for the batteries. The 5 tips are normally about $10 and each one is equal to a pack of cigarettes.

Heh, one of the few things I do not feel fully responsible for is starting smoking. I started in juvenile detention where they gave us two packs of cigarettes a week, when I was 15...

noOne: I have actually heard that one before. Interesting. Perhaps that is what Speee1dy's neighbor meant by saying that smoking was good for the brain.

Thanks,
