Anyone? Am looking to bar-b some meat on our trip and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a decent steak or chop. Thanks.

Hello Patrick,

I was in STT a few weeks ago. Another board member and I grilled steaks and pork chops at her hotel. Marina Market in Red Hook had a nice selection of fresh meat at a reasonable price. Cost U Less also had a nice selection. My first choice would be Marina Market.

I would agree, Marina Market for fresh meat.

For bulk, fresh red meat, I would say PriceSmart is pretty good.

Does Pricemart require membership like Costco or Sam's club here in the mainland?

You can either buy a membership ($35 I think) or go without and pay 5% extra on your purchases. Cost U Less is non membership. I buy a lot of my meats, poultry, etc. through Prime Foods. You don't necessarily have to buy in bulk but you sometimes it is a great deal. Paid $2 lb for pork chops last week. I have a freezer at work so it comes in very handy.

Adding a positive vote for Marina Market I would also add a cautionary note with respect to buying ANY meat from Plaza Extra: sanitation there seems less than rudimentary at best.

Marina Market did win Best Meats in the newspaper voting for 2004.

Yeah, go see Henry at Marina Market, they have the best meat. For bulk I agree, Pricemart is very good. The steaks at Marina Market are beautiful big cuts, pretty good prices but not cheap. Pricemart has normal cuts like a Publix or Winn Dixie and are cheap. Not real big on Plaza Extra, except for booze.

Hello all,
Just a little FYI. 😉 Pricemart membership is $10.00 per person. My husband wasn't as impressed with it. He felt that Cost-U-less had a better selection of food. Pricemart had a good selection of outdoor items and household items.

I have a friend, a charter boat chef, who says that Gourmet Gallery has good stuff, too.

make sure and take you own sauces, the really good ones from the states are not available there. Every trip I make everyone makes me load the luggage down with the good stuff from the states. I always wondered what the airport screeners were thinking when they see all that

He owns his own charter boat, but if that work interests you, you might want to contact Pamela of the VI Charter Yacht League. She is a frequent poster here!

Thanks, East Ender. We are always looking for good chefs. If you are interested email me a resume and I will post on our private crew placement board.
