Hey guys,
I need to get my oil changed and my check engine light is on (saying my 5th cylander is misfiring). Probably needs a new coil pack. Where on island is a reliable and not too expensive mechanic? I've heard good things about Elder's and Auto Clinic so far.

what kind of car is it?

replacing a coil is pretty easy really, maybe 20 min of work, I could walk you through it 🙂

testing for spark is where you need to start, you'd want to pull the #5 cyl spark plug and look up which fuse runs your fuel injectors & pull that out too(but you'll be putting that back so dont lose it)

put the #5 cyl spark plug on the engine block while connected to the spark plug then have someone try and start the car while you watch the spark plug for spark,

if it doesn't spark I'd start with a new spark plug ( you can take one from one of the other cylinders to test) then try another spark plug wire (that way you've ruled out the spark plug, and the plug wire) before you order a new coil pack.

to replace the coil pack it usually is just unplugging a few sparkplug wires & undoing two or three screws, put the new part in and reverse the steps.

if you do have a mechanic do it at least you'll understand what is involved 😉

It is a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I don't really know much about cars the only reason I know it may be a coil is because I was told so. I don't know if I could do that on my own only because I don't know what everything is but maybe one of my friends would understand this. Thank You so much!! 🙂

I have found Advance Auto Parts formerly Western Auto to be professional and fair especially for smaller jobs. They fixed a flat for $10, got my ebrake working really good, replaced a hard to reach light, done a couple of fluid changes, etc, nothing big, but worth it for me to get a tire fixed for $10-20 minutes, and my hands are still clean. If you need a part, they usually have it right there. I would not trust most local 'shade tree' mechanics.

Budget Super Service Center does it for me. Next door to Budget Car Rental's depot.
