car shipping

I need some clarification about shipping my car. I was given a quote of $2070 to get my car from FL to STX. This included $750 shipping, $260 local gov't. tax (4% of value), $330 for customs clearance, licensing and registration, $150 for DMV licensing and registration, and $580 road tax. I mentioned this to a colleague who already lives on STX and she indicated that was way too much. I've seen postings indicating shipping a car should cost between $2000 and $3000. I've seen other postings that say the fees should be around $800. The rest is just fee for service. What are the true expenses? I really can't afford to pay for conveniences for things I could muddle through myself. Are the DMV fees and road tax figures in the ballpark?
Thanks for the clarification.

Your number is in the ball park for full service.

If you want to stand in all the lines yourself you could save the $330 fee for having someone else do the leg work for customs and registration.

Hi. My fiance and I are also planning a relocation to STX ~ any suggestions on how to find the best way to transport our vehicle and belongings? We are currently in upstate NY, but assume it would be easier to ship from Florida. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can either drive your czr to Florida (Jacksonville = Crowley , FT Lauderdale = Tropical) or you can have it transported.

Just google auto transport and you will find hundreds of broker & trucking firms.

The bids I had from Chicago to Fla wer $700 - $800.

Hope this helps. Seach the FAQ and other posts for meore detailed info.
